But these are incredibly comfortable right out of the box, thanks to the soft, supple leather that molds to your feet and gives them that broken-in feel almost immediately. The classic ballet silhouette and round toe make them easy to wear, and the leather construction is designed to be flexible and durable over time. What I especially love are the colorways—they truly go with everything. My only caveat is that I’m not entirely sure how the arches hold up after many hours on your feet. Like most ballet flats, they’re fairly minimal in structure, and similar styles often don’t offer significant arch support. If you’re a fan of stores like Eileen Fisher, Massimo Dutti or Zara that combine a certain elevated elegance, edge and modernity, then you’re going to love British fashion retailer COS. After trying on just about everything, I curated my ultimate spring shopping list, which includes some trendy funnel-neck pieces as well as staple items like a little black dress and comfy jeans. This cool stunner caught my eye immediately, stopping me in my tracks and sending me back into the dressing room for a second round to try it on. It’s 100 percent nylon, making it the perfect piece to wear on a stroll, while running errands or over your trusty jeans as I did, pictured above. It has such a cool, sporty vibe that effortlessly elevates any look, and I especially liked that it was quite thick and warm without being stuffy.

As much as I love a trendy silhouette like the barrel-leg jean, I much prefer a classic, straight-leg option like this one from COS. Last year, I found a similar pair that I ended up walking away from, and I’ve never thought about jeans more in my life since, so these came home with me. They’re made from a blend of organic and recycled cotton, giving them a stiff, rigid quality that holds its shape without making me feel like I can’t move at all. Whenever I find a pair of jeans with a loose-but-tailored design around the thighs, I know I’ve hit the jackpot. I tried it on in my usual size, 27, and can attest that it runs true to size. If you want to round out your closet, make sure you own a ‘90s-approved little black dress like this darling piece from COS. It's classy, timeless and forgiving, with a sophisticated boatneck and boxy shape that gently skims your frame without actually clinging to it. Despite the forgiving silhouette, it doesn’t look frumpy in the slightest, thanks to darts at the waist that create a nice, sculpted shape. That being said, I wish I'd sized down to a 4 for a more bespoke fit. I know it might seem unsuitable for early spring at first glance, but don’t be fooled by the mini length—it's actually made from a merino wool blend that will keep you warm underneath.

My closet is overflowing with mostly black-and-white neutral garments, so I’ve made it my mission to add more color when I can. Enter: this bright blue beauty. It's comfortable, cozy and incredibly soft—everything that makes a great sweater. I’ve been really into layering my knits over white tees (this one I’m wearing is also from COS and among the best white T-shirts on the market), and the V-neck works perfectly for this. I also thought it would be great to drape it over my shoulders and tie it around my neck as a cute accessory, an extra layer of warmth (just in case it gets cold) and a splash of color.

Speaking of color, I couldn’t help but gravitate towards this blood orange stunner as I headed to the dressing room. Unlike the aforementioned piece, this 100 percent cashmere knit has a classic crew neckline that still looks great layered over a T-shirt (which I opted for), but will also look super chic on its own. The feel is incredibly soft and buttery, and if it weren’t labeled dry-clean-only, I would probably sleep in it whenever I could. Regarding the fit, it’s typically true to size, but if you want a relaxed, slouchy look like I did, definitely size up one or two; the large on me provided plenty of room to tuck and roll without overwhelming my figure.

6. COS Mini Cavatelli Leather Clutch Bag

As an avid Bottega Veneta fan, the second I laid eyes on this COS cutie, I thought of The Pouch—with a better price tag, might I add. The bag is crafted from premium leather and has a dumpling-like shape, with fluffy folds that give it a nice texture and knotted drawstrings at the sides to emphasize the gathered material tenfold. The deep wine-stained hue will complement browns and navys but will also look fabulous when paired within the same color family, such as with bright reds or soft pinks. The main reason I took this accessory home was because of its versatile use. It can function as a crossbody, shoulder bag or clutch when needed (I know, I’m freaking out, too).

If I could live in T-shirts, I would, but there’s something nice about switching it up every now and then. Options like this polo shirt are great to have because they’re just as versatile and comfortable as plain tees, but they add a little more oomph to your look—especially when they feature color-blocking like this gem, pairing a moody chocolate with the trim’s vibrant blue (the same blue I fell in love with on the sweater above). It also makes a great piece to pack for trips because it's lightweight despite its warm wool blend. One thing to note: as the name suggests, it has a shrunken fit, so if you prefer the ribbed hem to sit loose along your hips, I’d recommend sizing up.

This muted neon green-and-black checked piece was the most out of my comfort zone of the bunch, but I had to remind myself that sometimes the best outfits often come from being a little adventurous—i.e., giving those black and grey knits a much-needed break. When I tried this on, I felt like a different person in the best way. From the bold print to the tonal green colorway, everything about this button-up was fun, daring and completely polished. It genuinely boosted my confidence, making me stand a little taller and push my shoulders back. The jacquard-knitted fabric is crafted from a soft cotton blend that, while not as soft as a sweater, remains stretchy and form-fitting due to its slim design. (And don’t worry, it’s not itchy, either.) Unlike the matching skirt, it didn’t cling to my body but rather skimmed my silhouette, and it had a gathered effect along the seams that was flattering, especially considering how noisy the fabric can be.

Unfortunately, I didn't see this beauty when I was shopping in the store, but if I had, I would’ve chucked the Amazon one off my head and into the bin. I’ve seen my fair share of accessories, including headbands of all colors and widths, but I have never seen one with a thoughtful topstitching detail like this. For decades, animal print has meant one thing: leopard. Maybe zebra, if you were feeling bold. Occasionally cow, if you were online enough. But this season, a softer, stranger motif has entered the chat—and it’s quickly gaining ground. Deer print, inspired by delicate fawns, woodland whimsy and storybook speckles, is emerging as fashion’s most unexpected animal obsession.

After seasons of pared-back minimalism, there’s a renewed appetite for a splash of personality, and deer print lands somewhere in between. It’s playful and detailed without being chaotic. As an unabashed Francophile, Sézane has long been on my radar. I first heard about the cult Parisian brand while living in Paris as a fresh college grad, lusting after the 100 percent wool sweaters in the flagship boutique on Rue Saint-Fiacre. As I’ve gotten older and added many Sézane pieces to my wardrobe, one has stood above the rest: The Clyde trench coat. It’s the French label’s take on a quintessentially British closet staple, with a simple, almost Peter-Pan-like collar and oversized cut. It has garnered quite a following, from PureWow’s own editors to the fashionable TikTok set. However, it does come with a hefty price tag, clocking in at $355. While I do love it, there are many great options out there that are similar in design, more affordable and available in a variety of lengths. I know this because I combed through hundreds of trench coats in search of worthy Sézane alternatives, and narrowed it down to seven styles that feel up to snuff. And they’re all less than $300.

How I Chose the Coats

Sézane’s trench is actually a Mac coat, short for “Mackintosh.” It’s meant to serve as a rainy-day staple, with water-resistant fabric and a generous cut that’s convenient when layering. The Mac coat is typically single-breasted without a belt, but can still have pockets. (The Clyde has great pockets, for the record.) On the other hand, a classic trench finds its roots in British army uniforms dating back to World War I. The name is actually a reference to the brutal, lethal style of trench warfare popular at the time. The trench is defined by a doubled-breasted design with pockets, a wide belt and shoulder straps. In this round-up, I focused on single-breasted coats with oversized cuts, simple collars and lack of any embellishment to keep things understated and très chic.

1. Tankaneo Single-Breasted Trench

Sometimes you want to find as close a match as possible to the original design. If that’s the case with the Sézane Clyde coat, then the Tankaneo trench from Amazon really is as close as you’re going to get. Even I, a Sézane acolyte, did an initial double take. The silhouette is nearly identical, down to the checkered lining, pockets and tortoiseshell buttons. There are seven colorways, including Army Green, Navy and Dark Grey. Buyers have praised this coat for its versatility (even on petite frames), noting that it’s a great windbreaker and perfect for inclement weather. Plus, it’s under $70, making it the most affordable option on this list.

One downer about Sézane: It’s not always petite friendly. Still, petite blogger Jean Wang has said that the Clyde “fits big and long for petites, but nevertheless it has become the one I reach for the most” for full-body coverage.

At 5’6’’, even I know that buying pants here may mean a trip to the tailor to lop off a couple inches. With its already generous cut of fabric, the Clyde is likely to engulf my friends below 5’4’’, as it already hits me mid-shin. That’s why I like this little number from Sam Edelman. It’s got the simplicity we adore at a shorter length, giving petites more wiggle room. It’s also got some side slits and buttoned cuffs on the wrists for that trench-like flair.

3. Avec Les Filles Gingham Trench

One of my favorite details about the Clyde is its gingham lining, which peeks playfully from the sleeves when they’re rolled back. As soon as I saw Avec Les Filles’ design, it made me think of the lining of Sézane’s coat, inside out and joyous. The cut is similar, though this style is shorter and ends at the knees. A single row of buttons, flat collar and big welt pockets make it a refreshing take on the silhouette. There’s even a zipper for double the security.

4. Banana Republic Factory Twill Mac Coat

Banana Republic Factory’s twill coat is another near dead-ringer for the Clyde, at a more cropped length. It’s got the classic stand collar, raglan sleeves and tortoiseshell buttons, welt pockets and a back vent. There are sleeve cuffs, but they aren’t overly bulky and add a touch of contrast. A great petite option, as well as one for those who prefer shorter coats.

5. Zara Plaid Cuff Trench

Similarly to the Tankaneo trench, Zara’s version had me blinking at my computer screen. Like the Clyde, this plaid-cuff trench has a gingham lining in eerily similar shades. From the front, it looks nearly identical, save for the shorter length. But there are two surprises that give it a delightful spin: buttons on the collar (helpful on extremely windy days) and a back flap that adds some dimension.

6. Everlane Drapey Twill Trench

If you like the Clyde’s more relaxed cut but want a traditional trench, I find this style from Everlane to be a nice compromise. It has the cut of a classic trench coat—lapels, storm flap, button cuffs and belt—but also has the looser fit that Mac coats are known for, meaning you can pile on the layers without the risk of looking bulky.

7. Gap Oversized Mac Trench Coat

Perhaps you like the cut of the Clyde but wish it came with a belt to rein in the silhouette. (Some days I definitely do.) Gap’s Mac coat is your answer. It’s sleek and single breasted with a similar spread collar, and it includes a belt to define the waist. Not to mention, it’s available in petite-specific sizing.

I Just Got Back from NYFW. These Trends Dominated Both on and off the Runway

New York Fashion Week in February always hits a little differently. It’s the tail end of winter, when everyone is over the cold, yet committed to showing up dressed. This season, the runways were full of smart surprises that didn’t disappoint, while the sidewalks reinforced that the best trends are the ones you can actually wear tomorrow. Across the many styles I noted, both on models and fellow attendees, there was a clear focus on rich textures and pops of color. Pillbox hats added instant sophistication to puffy coats and tailored sets. Sheer pieces layered beautifully under structured wool coats, while suede and other tactile fabrics gave outfits depth. And, when bright colors appeared, they showed up as flashes of neon. Altogether, the vibe at NYFW Fall/Winter ‘26 felt wearable and exciting, exactly what we want from fashion right now.

Ahead, my favorite trends spotted on and off the runways.

1. The Pillbox and Beret Revival

A structured silhouette instantly pulls a look together, especially in a season dominated by oversized coats and heavy layers, and this season the pillbox hat and beret are clear winners. At Romeo Hunte and Anna Sui, wool versions sat neatly atop sleek tailoring and longline dresses and skirts. On the streets, editors and influencers styled their pillbox hats with sweeping coats and flat boots, while others wore them with leather jackets and straight-leg jeans.

2. The Shawl Effect

Shawl dressing took on new life this season, evolving from winter staple to runway muse. At FFORME, models layered oversized shawls over sweaters and pants, treating them like outerwear and statement pieces. Textures ranged from brushed silks to fluffy, cloud-like cashmeres.

Off the runway, street style embraced draped scarves and fur-lined wraps as transitional pieces. Whether cinched with a belt or worn loose over a monochrome base, the oversized shawl has become a symbol of chic luxury.

3. Sheer Possibilities

If NYFW had a mood this season, it was transparency. Sheer fabrics dominated the runways at Tory Burch and LaQuan Smith, creating a dialogue between exposure and artistry. Delicate tulle and chiffon paired with heavier meshes and lace, layering over undergarments and tailored separates. Seen on the streets in the form of sheer tops over bralettes, pants with transparent panels and sheer socks paired with chunky boots, the trend extends beyond couture into relatable, wearable style.

4. Pops of Neon

If anyone thought neon had retired after the 2010s, New York Fashion Week proved otherwise. The streets became a neon playground, with creative directors, stylists and influencers weaving pops of day-glow into tonal outfits. A neon clutch here, a belt there, even electric kicks under a neutral coat; the trend brought a playful energy to the often serious fashion week rotation. Highlighter colors burst onto the runways at Ashlyn and Sergio Hudson, punctuating structured tailoring and billowing fabrics alike. Neon trims, belts and even socks added a kinetic charge to every look.

5. Tactile Textures

Texture was everywhere. Three-dimensional fabrics took center stage at Diotima and Christian Siriano (who also launched a beauty line, Runway Skincare, the same chaotic week), where designers experimented with nubby bouclés, crinkled satins, knit mosaics and raised embroidery. In the streets, texture translated into layering, with shaggy sweaters set against smooth leathers, and quilted skirts paired with large fuzzy scarves.

Suede showed up in force, too. At Coach and Ralph Lauren, it came in shades of brown and burnt orange, cut into trenches, slim trousers and abbreviated minis. Even the accessories leaned in, often complemented by leather. Outside the shows, oversized suede jackets, patchwork skirts and worn-in boots moved easily through the streets, suggesting that this plush finish won’t be going away anytime soon.

Skinny, straight-leg, wide-leg, flare—you probably thought you’ve seen it all in terms of the denim trend cycle. After all, how many forms could a pair of jeans possibly take? Well, as it turns out, one more: barrel! A few seasons ago, barrel-leg jeans seemingly came out of nowhere and, despite the debate surrounding their shape, quickly took closets by storm. The unique silhouette, which curves out through the middle of the leg and tapers in at the ankle, essentially creates a bow-legged effect that, for some, can actually be super flattering. (See this former PureWow editor’s review, in which she raved about how the pants balanced her wide hips.) But could the polarizing style work for petites? I, a 5’1” fashionista, set out to find out.

The first time I saw barrel-leg jeans out in the wild, I’ll be honest, I was not a fan. However, the more frequently they appeared on my social feeds, the more I warmed up to them. I liked the way they added drama and structure to otherwise basic ensembles, while still feeling cool and relaxed. The voluminous shape still seemed tricky for a gal of my stature to pull off, but, never one to shy away from a challenge, I bit the bullet and picked up two highly rated pairs from my favorite petite-friendly denim retailers: the Madewell darted barrel jeans ($148) and the Abercrombie & Fitch mid-rise barrel jeans (~~$90~~; $72), both of which come in short lengths ideal for my height.

The shape certainly brought me out of my comfort zone, but after a little trial and error, I figured out the best ways to style my barrel jeans as a petite—and now I truly can’t get enough of ‘em. If you’re a fellow shortie looking to give this trend a try, read on for the styling rules I swear by.

1. Nail the Length

I am all too familiar with the struggle of finding pants that don’t pool at my feet or drag on the ground, so in order to avoid constant trips to the tailor, I now look for bottoms that are available specifically in petite lengths (like the ones I show off here from Madewell and Abercrombie). In the case of barrel jeans, wearing the right length is especially important, as the shape’s widest point is meant to hit at the knee, with its slimmest point coming in at the ankle. If the proportions are off or the hem is dragging, the pants are just going to look like they’re too big. If you’re 5’4” or under, you’ll want to look for styles with an inseam between 24 and 26 inches, which should yield a perfect fit through the leg sans hemming.

2. Wear a Fitted Top

If half an outfit is oversized, the other half should be more tailored. It’s a flattering formula for most body types, but one that’s a must if you’re petite. Why? Well, looser, wider styles can easily overwhelm our frames and cause us to look even smaller, so head-to-toe volume tends to work against us. To counter the exaggerated structure of a barrel jean, it’s best to show off at least part of your figure with a more form-fitting top (or my alternative go-to, a bodysuit).

3. Display the Waist

To that end, I suggest going for either tucked-in or cropped tops that keep the waistband of the jeans visible. Not only will this create a nice hourglass effect, it will also make your legs look longer, particularly if the waistband hits higher on your torso. As a petite, it’s all about using proportion to our advantage. One caveat, however, is that many barrel jeans are designed to be sort of slouchy and low-slung; to get a snug fit at the waist that allows it to sit higher, I actually went down one size from my usual (though I think I could’ve even gotten away with two).

4. Show Off Your Shoulders

In general, an off-the-shoulder neckline is a great pick for us shorties, since it draws the eye upward and makes our necks look longer (therefore making us look taller). But the silhouette is especially beneficial when paired with barrel jeans. Here’s why: Accentuating the shoulders adds width to your top half, which is then able to balance out the wide cut of the bottoms. The result? An overall harmonious and proportional look that makes the barrel shape appear less overpowering on your frame.

5. Pair with Pointy Shoes

If there’s one shoe shape every short girl should have multiples of in her closet, it’s le pointed-toe. The sleek, sharp point elongates the legs and creates the illusion of extra height—and that’s a must when you have wide-cut bottoms like these working against you. While opting for some sort of heel (even a kitten) is also a smart move here, I find that heel height actually matters less than choosing a pointy shoe that shows off the top of the foot, like a low-cut pump or slingback. The idea is that more skin equals more length, but you can judge for yourself in the contrast above.

This sweater is the nautical version, with fisherman rib detailing that makes you look like you’re ready to spend a summer sailing the Mediterranean. The fit is slightly relaxed for easy layering, but can also be tucked in for a more polished look.

"The Fisherman Cashmere sweater has easily become my go-to layer that I wear from fall to spring," says PureWow Affiliate Director Pam Masin. “It's warm without being stifling. I feel very cozy in it, but never rosy-cheeked and in need of a fan, which is often my issue with cashmere. There's a breathability to it that's really nice. I really like the fit and quality for the price point. It feels foolproof and classic; something you can reach for and feel good in, even if you only have a few minutes to dash out the door.” she adds.

I would wear cashmere in all its forms, though I was admittedly skeptical about a cashmere T-shirt. "Would it actually be warm?" I thought. Turns out, this silhouette is a great transitional piece, especially on warmer winter days.

Quince's version comes in at under $50 and in 11 colors. In higher winter temps (in the 40s), I don’t mind throwing just my Canada Goose parka over the shirt and walking outside. The T-shirt isn’t bulky, so I can also layer it under other knits for additional warmth. Combined with the fact that it’s super soft, I can see myself wearing it well into spring, since it takes forever for NYC to thaw out into summer.

What Is Mongolian Cashmere?

Mongolia cashmere, as the name implies, comes from wool farmers in Mongolia. The fibers are supplied by cashmere goats. There are three grades: A, B and C, with quality measured in microns. The lower the micron count, the finer the fiber. Grade A is approximately 15 to 16 microns; Grade B, 16 to 17; and Grade C, 17 to 21. Grade A is considered the highest quality. Quince’s sweaters now exclusively use Grade A Mongolian cashmere.

Washing Cashmere

Before the brand relaunched its cashmere offerings, Quince made machine washable cashmere sweaters. Speaking from personal experience, you should never put your cashmere in the washing machine.

The brand now counsels hand-washing in cold water with mild detergent and then air drying. As someone who owns a lot of dry-clean-only sweaters, I can attest that this is an effective cleaning method, though in general, you should avoid washing as much as possible. And definitely skip the fabric softener. Don’t worry—one of cashmere’s (and wool’s) great qualities is its ability to wick moisture. The breathability means it stays fresh longer.

I Hemmed My Jeans for Years Until I Met Mother Denim’s Petite-Friendly Line

I first heard about Mother Denim from my Brooklyn-based mom group. A query posted by a mom in desperate search of figure-flattering—yet comfortable enough for child-rearing—jeans resulted in a chorus of opinions. The consensus? Mother’s selection of cool girl silhouettes in combination with its buttery soft material was everyone’s tried-and-true.

That’s when something funny happened: The minute Mother was on my radar, I felt like it was manifesting itself everywhere I looked. Whether it was seeing celebs like Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton and Jennifer Garner reliably wear the brand or simply spotting the above-the-back-pocket label on more than a few moms at school drop-off, my interest was officially piqued.

But the minute I slid it on, I was in love with the high-rise fit, the curved outer seam and the snugness which hits in all the right places. Did the wide leg swallow me up? Not at all. Instead, it felt figure-skimming and chic—not to mention, ultra-slimming. The hem of this particular pair was a bit longer than other Lil’ Mother styles, but it’s intentionally designed to be oversized and worn low on the hips, according to the brand. I repeat: It’s the outer seam that gives this style a tailored effect. This particular pair required a shoe with a bit of a heel (I reached for a pair of loafers with a chunky tread, for reference), but other than that, it’s a great way to try a trendier silhouette that caters to anyone on the shorter side.

(I noticed that after a few wears, the rigid-feeling material already started to have more give.) But it’s also a fit where it’s not just the shorter inseam that will appeal to petites: The subtle fading, the whiskering and distressed details all hit at exactly the right places. (My fellow shorties can attest that there’s nothing weirder than a wash that falls inaccurately on your frame.) Fashion trends come and go, but leggings are forever. I, for one, have never even entertained the argument that they “aren’t pants.” If they’re opaque and cover your legs, what else would they be? Even if you disagree on that particular point, however, there’s no denying the fact that they’re easy—not just to throw on when the thought of buttoning up a pair of jeans feels like a chore, but also to build a stylish outfit around.

2026 may be the year of nostalgia—what with all of us looking back at our OOTDs from 2016 and all—but when it comes to wearing leggings, we want our stretchy-fabric-covered legs planted firmly in the present. There are a few updated ways to wear these somewhat controversial bottoms in order to make them feel chic and of-the-moment. And there are a couple that feel a little too much like a throwback. When it comes to winter, I find it supremely hard to get dressed. Not for want of clothes, but because my winter wardrobe is BORING. I almost exclusively wear my Canada Goose Mystique parka, which though is incredibly warm, pretty much amounts to a sleeping bag. So, I started digging. Could there possibly exist some stylish wool coats for extreme cold? The answer: Yes. After speaking with two stylists and PureWow editors, I combed through dozens of wool coats, evaluating temperature ratings, buyer and professional reviews, fabric composition and more to cull the list down to six contenders. Read on, and be warm.

How to Choose a Wool Coat for Extreme Cold

Sharpe, Bolognese and I are advocates that 100 percent wool is the highest quality and warmest option. When shopping, check the composition tag. Oftentimes marketing is misleading; “wool” coats end up being blended with a high percentage of synthetic fabrics. Below are their guidelines when shopping for a wool coat that will actually keep you warm.

Avoid synthetics when you can. Per Bolognese, all the properties of polyester (moisture wicking, anti-microbial, stretchy, etc.) are also true of wool. If it’s in your budget, it’s worth it to cut the plastic and go for 100 percent wool.
If you choose a blend, make it at least 60 percent wool. Sharpe’s general rule is to select a wool coat with a minimum of 85 percent natural fibers if you’re expecting it to do heavy lifting (i.e. hold up in sub-freezing temperatures). If you’re laying you can get away with as little as 60 to 75 percent wool—but avoid anything under 50 percent if you need it to be functional.
Look for industry certifications. Bolognese recommends keeping an eye out for certifications from The Reliable Wool Standard or OEKO TEX, which serve as third-party quality control.
Understand the super numbers and opt for a lower one. “Depending on the wool source, you may be lucky enough to see a super number associated with the wool,” Bolognese explains. “The lower that super number (Super 100's, Super 130's, etc.), the thicker the individual fibers that make up that fabric, and the more durable and insulated you're likely to be. The higher those numbers get (Super 180's, Super 200's, etc.), the material gets finer and finer, which is great for a luxurious feel, but not for staying warm.”
Long > short. When defending yourself against winter temps, length matters. “For colder months, I’d recommend choosing a longer coat,” Sharpe says. “Longer styles help keep your legs warm and can reduce how much layering you need underneath since the coat itself acts as a barrier against the elements.” Of course, choose the coat in proportion to your height.
Wool weight matters. Bolognese says that sometimes, you can see the wool weight measured in grams per meter or yard. A high number indicates more warmth. However, you can also get a feel for it by simply picking up the coat.
Opt for viscose or Bemberg linings. The lining of a coat is probably not going to be made of wool and is typically polyester, which generates a lot of static. Bolognese suggests viscose or Bemberg linings instead; both materials are made of cellulose and are anti-static. Overall, he recommends a lined coat over an unlined one, saying they “benefit from having some kind of slippery lining so the wearer can comfortably get their arm (and all its layers) through the sleeve without snagging or ripping anything.”
Don’t shy away from secondhand. Sites like eBay, Poshmark, Depop and others can yield affordable hidden gems.

Keeping Sharpe and Bolognese’s advice in mind, I’ve rounded up six wool coats that are up to the task—including three expert-approved styles.

Quince’s wool and cashmere coat is one of Bolognese’s top picks. The coat hits the knees and fastens with a single-breasted button. It has a temperature rating down to 4 degrees Fahrenheit—well below the extreme cold definition of freezing (32 degrees). The 90/10 wool-cashmere coat comes in five neutral colors, with two slanted front pockets and an interior pocket.

2. Woolrich Virgin Wool Coat

Another style Bolognese recommends is this pick from Woolrich. The brand was established in 1830 in Pennsylvania, steeped in a rich history of crafting superior outdoor apparel and environmental and social responsibility. One of its partnerships involves Italian textile manufacturer Manteco, creator of MWool, a recycled wool incorporated into some Woolrich garments. The brand’s virgin wool coat is 100% natural fibers with an oversized cut that can be easily layered with thicker sweaters. An adjustable self-tie belt, dropped shoulders and patch pockets give the otherwise simple silhouette some flair.

Bolognese’s last recommendation is Goelia’s wool overcoat, which has 100 percent wool shell. The wrap coat has a self-tying belt and falls mid-shin for extra coverage, plus pockets and a classic lapel. Though wool has a tendency to be scratchy, Goelia promises that the feeling of this fabric stays cozy and supple.

4. Quince Italian Wool Slouch Coat

Searching for a wool coat for extreme cold that’s under $200? Quince’s Italian wool slouch coat will answer the call. The wool blend still stays within Sharpe’s recommended minimum 80 percent range, but can still withstand chill temps as low as 6 degrees Fahrenheit. PureWow’s Associate Director of Social Strategy, Emily Brozyna, says, “Last winter, I spent months searching for a chic, elevated black coat because I can't be wearing a puffer all the time. I wanted something reasonably priced with a high wool content, and by the very end of the season and hours spent scrolling, I finally decided on this Quince coat. I was so glad I had it ready to go this season because I've truly been wearing it nonstop for the past three months. I've even worn it in negative temperatures (with many layers underneath, of course), and it's truly kept me nice and toasty, without the bulk.”

Artizia has come up repeatedly in my research for the best wool coats for extreme cold, with a temperature rating of -4 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s the lowest rating on this list. It has a 78/10 wool/cashmere blend and comes in nine colors, including a swath of gray iterations. I don’t know if I’m being influenced by all the period dramas, but I love a great coat—the slouchy, oversized nature lends itself well to layering, and feels like a huge blanket.

6. Quince Merino Wool Scarf Coat

Sure, a long coat is expert-recommended, but if you run warm (or temps hover closer to freezing), a short wool coat can still get the job done. PureWow Senior Commerce Editor Stephanie Maida raves about Quince’s trendy, 100 percent merino wool scarf coat, which nods to Toteme’s original viral silhouette.

Sorry, Dakota Johnson, but there’s a new—errr, old?—style icon on the block. While I love Johnson’s understated style (her latest movie, Materialists, was no exception), Carolyn Bessette Kennedy is ruling today’s fashion more than she ever did in the ‘90s. I’ve been clocking her reemergence in the sartorial conversation for years, starting with this New York Times article from 2023. But the surge in interest 26 years after her death can most definitely be attributed to Ryan Murphy’s Love Story, which premiered in February 2026 to a collective sigh of relief, having seemingly corrected the shortcomings of the early costuming test photos.

The real Bessette Kennedy’s style endures as a beacon of ‘90s chic. So, what comprised her wardrobe? Lots of Prada, for starters. A Birkin (stuffed). White button downs, LBDs, bias-cut silk slip dresses, trench coats, naked sandals, tortoiseshell headbands and oval sunglasses. Neutrals like black, beige and brown. Levi’s 517s, knee high boots, a plain white tee. The clothing wasn’t groundbreaking by any means, but the simplicity was its strength, with Bessette Kennedy a master of styling. A quick perusal of her outfits reveals that she followed the CST Rule, meaning that while she didn’t play with Color, she wasn’t afraid to shake up the Shape and Texture of her clothes.

How to Nail Carolyn Bessett Kennedy Core

While the fashion legend enjoyed racking her closet with designer wear, she also appreciated things like a good white T-shirt and Levi’s 517s. And ultimately, you don’t need a blank check to replicate the aesthetic—just some intentional styling tips.

Keep it neutral. Photos of CBK rarely show her wearing anything other than beige, black and brown. (Though, you might spot her leopard-print coat occasionally. But animal print is a neutral!) Stick with basic colors to ensure wardrobe cohesion.
Have a good pair of jeans on hand. Bessette Kennedy reportedly favored vintage Levi’s 517 bootcut jeans. As long as you opt for a looser fit, you can nail the ‘90s ease. (No skinny jeans here.)
Simple silhouettes, interesting textures. Though she was known for her pared-down aesthetic, CBK was anything but boring. That’s because she was a master of the CST rule. If you ever look in your closet and think you have “nothing to wear,” never forget the night that Bessette Kennedy styled a white button-down with a tiered black maxi skirt for the 1999 Whitney Museum Gala. This is my favorite closet staple because, as she proves, you can dress it way up, or way down. My favorite is a pair of interesting jeans + belt + ballet flats. Instant polish, almost zero effort.

One of my favorite coats is a long, black wool number I snagged five years ago, so I can attest to the versatility and longevity of the style. I’ve long felt like strutting up to school drop-off in Brooklyn can feel a bit like a runway. Yes, the accessories are less cool (I’m typically toting my kid’s backpack on his behalf), but the pressure to put some effort in for spontaneous interactions with other parents is real. And while it’s tempting to neglect myself in the morning as I race to get both kids out the door, I’ll admit that taking a moment to consider my style is one of the best ways to set my day off on the right note, especially as a mom who primarily works from home.

That said, winter is hard. This month saw temps dipping well below zero (not counting the real feel), and it goes without saying that layers are required. While it’s true that my sartorial decisions this season could pretty much stay out of sight beneath my puffer coat, it’s the unexpected detour to the local coffee shop, the long-scheduled classroom concert, even a simple lost-and-found drive-by that make it a given that what I wear will be on display at some point.

Here is what I wore this month to make sure I not only felt practical and polished, but also warm.

1. A Quick Trip to a Coffee Shop

A button-down feels like old faithful in my closet, but the frigid temps had me leaning on an additional layer: this chic ribbed turtleneck from Everlane. Madewell’s “easy” shirt is exactly that—easy—so, after giving it a quick steam (alongside my kid’s jeans that had been crumpled up in his bottom drawer), I felt good to go. But that’s not all: I paired it with a colorful neck scarf (dopamine dressing always wins in winter, IMO) and a beloved pair of petite-friendly Frame jeans.

2. Below Zero

If you want a work-around for a colder morning, merino wool is the way to go. Honestly, this popcorn polo cardigan from Misha & Puff is so warm that you almost don’t need a coat. I also love the soft rose hue and detailing. I got so many compliments on this statement style as I approached the drop-off line. I kept the look simple with blue jeans, worn over opaque red tights (my version of long underwear on this frigid day). My Margaux loafers (and their robust treads) completed the look.

3. In-School Concert

Like I mentioned, my son had the cutest-ever concert this month (given the state of the world, it was superhero-themed). This felt like the perfect moment to wear a Clare V sweatshirt with a message: “Vive le resistance,” it read. I wore it with a pair of MOTHER denim (their petite line is the best) and a delicate tennis necklace, too. Like I said, layering is the style throughway this season, so I also kept a blazer on hand to throw on over my shoulders just in case the auditorium felt extra chilly.

4. Office-Bound

I mostly work from home, but on the days that I do commute to the city, I typically take on drop-off for my son en route to the train. To be clear, I would never do the mile-long walk to my son’s school in heels—instead, I swapped my sneakers for heels upon arrival at the office—but this particular pair from Inez somehow keeps me blister-free, no matter the paces I put them through. Still, this cashmere cardigan from White & Warren is my outfit’s centerpiece, delivering a subtle dose of prep while keeping me cozy and ready for the season’s fluctuating temps. Paired with a cargo pant from Scanlan Theodore, this is an outfit that felt polished for school drop-off and in-person meetings.

5. Running Late

To get my kid to school, we walk a mile—and in moments of desperation, i.e. like this morning when teeth brushing and lunch box-packing took a little too long, we take a cab. But I still wanted a look that left me warm and feeling pulled together. This lounge set from AYR (aptly named the Bodega Run) in a pretty and light purple-y hue gave me the pop of color I needed while helping me stay cozy. With my Veja sneakers and a wool topper (from Rudsak, similar here), it felt functional, but most importantly like effort was made.

The year may have only just begun, but I’m already sensing a theme when it comes to 2026’s biggest style trends: nostalgia. From ‘90s dad sneakers to aughts-inspired snakeskin to beauty looks plucked from 2016, the fashion and beauty zeitgeist has been moving forward by looking back—and, apparently, that includes gymwear. Sleek, minimalist workout sets had their moment. According to my TikTok and Instagram feeds, the 2000s athleisure aesthetic is making a comeback, and as an Ed Hardy-collecting, Juicy Couture tracksuit-wearing millennial, I’ve been ready. The vibe is the opposite of the muted Pilates Princess look—think bright colors, big logos, layered tanks and sporty stripes. Even the yoga mom favorite, foldover flares, are cool again.

I had to do a double-take when I scrolled by these lululemon bottoms—they look so authentically 2000s, I thought I had accidentally ended up on eBay. Between the sports team-inspired graphic, contrast stripe down the leg and cropped, flared cut, they’re nostalgic in the best way. But I would bet that they’re even more comfortable than the gym pants I wore in 2005 since they’re constructed of the brand’s buttery-soft Nulu material.

My big gripe with cold-weather dressing is that it’s often utilitarian at the expense of style. Big, puffy parka that make you look like the Michelin man. Colorless, shapeless—albeit insulated—footwear. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my Bean boots, but I also don’t want to feel like I’m on a duck hunting expedition for the entire season. When I saw that PureWow reader-loved brand Vivaia had launched a fluffy pair of winter boots ($219; currently $199), I was curious. Could I actually have some modicum of style without losing a foot to hypothermia? Here’s what I discovered after two weeks of testing.

New York has seen record snow and frigid temperatures as of late. In fact, I don’t think it’s crested above freezing since we had our crazy snowstorm a few weeks ago. Shorthand: I currently live in Antarctica. This past weekend had “feels like” temperatures in the negative teens. Snow—now packed down to ice—is still everywhere. In a bid to stay warm, I’ve been lacing up the Terry boots to see how they would hold up in slush, slippery, hard-packed snow and howling wind. I evaluated them on the PureWow100 scale, rating the boots for warmth, comfort, design, grip and value.

The Faux Fur Delivers

Faux fur is not something I typically gravitate towards, I’ve always been skeptical of its insulating properties. Thus, I was pleasantly surprised that the Terry boots were so cozy. The faux fur is plush and soft, making these shoes something I’d definitely gravitate towards over Bean boots on extra-chilly days.

The brand suggests sizing up, however, I found that doing so made them almost too roomy. Unless you’re wearing extra-thick socks, I think these boots are true to size. You can wear them with medium-weight socks and still be plenty warm. Take it from someone whose extremities are cold (and often slightly blue) when the thermostat dips below 75F. I went with the half size up just because I wanted the option of wearing super-thick socks, especially if I took these boots out in the countryside.

The Terry boots are pretty heavy-duty, as far as fashion footwear goes, but the design keeps them feeling fun. A lug sole provides a 2.24-inch height boost, and the faux fur lining extends around the opening and shaft. There’s also a handy pull-tab to help you get them on; and yes, I needed it. As for the grip, I was pleased to discover that they held their own against my Bean boots’ gridlock rubber sole. I didn’t slip around any more than I do in my Bean boots. In some instances, like when I walked through a pile of mushy snow, I thought they had better traction, and the rivets in the sole provided a stable grip when wading into snowbanks.

The Cons

There aren’t major cons but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, if you have flat feet like me, you’ll find the footbed a little lacking. However, if you size up half a size, you can easily accommodate arch supports. The other thing to note is that the lug sole is, well, chunky. The Terry boots are a lot more unwieldy than my Bean boots, so maneuverability is something to consider.

My biggest gripe is that the boots are not machine washable, unlike many other Vivaia styles. Personally, this is a shoe I’d want to wash, given the slushy streets and inevitable splashes—especially on the faux fur. While the boots are water resistant, that didn’t stop my pair from accruing some salt stains that I’ll have to sponge off.

Vivaia’s Terry boots are warm and insulated, with a water-resistent upper that withstands light rain, snow and the slushy aftermath that follows. They can handle freezing temperatures and leave ample room for thick socks. In short, they’re a solid compromise between style, functionality and comfort.

And Amazon is one of my favorite places to find cozy, cotton, wool, cashmere and recycled poly-blend hidden gems that actually look cute, feel great and last through multiple cold-weather seasons.

If you ask me, no wardrobe is complete without at least one (or 10) of these cozy favorites.

If you’re looking for something that’s warmer and chunkier but still stylish to boot, look no further than this fabulous coatigan. The soft fabric is a blend of materials, including elastane and goat, which gives it a soft, cozy feel. And I absolutely adore how slouchy it is, as it adds texture and volume to any outfit. Not to mention, every time you wear it out, I bet it’ll feel like you’ve stepped outside the house wrapped in your coziest blanket—except it won’t look it! My only concern is that some reviewers mention it pills easily, so that’s something to keep in mind. The instructions suggest handwashing to help minimize that.

On a blustery day, there’s nothing better than burrowing deep down into a comfy pullover sweater that feels just as warm and soft as your sweatshirt without any of the slouch, like this one. Shoppers say it’s “it looks great right out of the package” and well-made, offering all the creature comforts you could ever want in a favorite sweater.

4. Ckikiou Cashmere Pullover Sweater

This wonderful off-the-shoulder sweater is made from a silky cashmere, cotton and polyester blend that’s sure to keep you warm on chilly fall evenings. The style is very loose-fitting, making it feel as if you are being wrapped in a cozy, soft blanket. In fact, the only issue I could find was choosing a favorite color, given the more than 40 options. While I was hesitant about its one-size-fits-all approach, one helpful reviewer noted that, despite the lack of specific sizing, the oversized knit is versatile and stretchy: “I’m plus size and this sweater is one size fits all,” they wrote. “The material is quality, yet lightweight [and] the boat neck is not too wide where my bra shows. It is so comfortable.”

Nothing screams “cozy season” more than a comfy plaid top—just take a look at this Buffalo plaid pattern for proof! The long knit is nice and light and looks great whether buttoned or left open to feel the crisp air as we begin to transition to a new season. It’s even got two big welt pockets for your keys, your phone or anything else you might need to take on your next adventure.

This preppy cardigan has both Megan Markle vibes and Celine vibes, so really, what more could you ask for? Gold buttons, uniform stripes and the classy crew neckline all create a polished, quiet luxury look—despite the fact that the sweater is only around $30. I especially love how it has a nice crop that falls at the widest part of the hips, making it easy to do a French tuck or leave it open over a tank top to help elongate your figure. Better yet, it's machine-washable.

7. Kirundo Striped Sweater

Silver buttons along the shoulders and a seafaring print add polish to this cozy turtleneck. It’s made of nylon and viscose for a soft yet durable blend that pairs well with wide-leg jeans. The stripes add a nice touch, elevating this beyond your usual go-to seasonal knit. And buyers seem to agree, with occasional concerns about the button’s material. “Sleeve lengths are wonderful, SO SOFT and just couldn't get over the overall quality,” noted one reviewer who was overall “impressed” by the sweater. “I read people [are] not happy with the buttons on the left shoulder—it is true, those are more of a harder plastic, not metal, but that doesn't bother me. They are sewn on well, and to button and unbutton them is easy.”

This slouchy option features cable-knit detailing and pairs well with jeans and Chelsea boots. It’s made of breathable cotton, so you won't feel overheated, and it comes in several solid colors to suit your fall style “I have received more compliments on this sweater than on any other item of clothing I have,” gushed an Amazon customer. “Beautiful color, very soft, warm. On a cold winter's day, [there’s] nothing better than the warmth of this sweater, listening to all the compliments.”

If you aren’t into the added bulk that can come along with a thick, seasonal sweater, take a closer look at this gorgeous, lightweight basic. Its largely cotton-and-polyester blend that makes it machine-washable, and it fits close to the body while still allowing plenty of movement. “It drapes beautifully, doesn’t cling, and the fabric feels soft against the skin,” says Amazon reviewer Beth S. “Great for the office, running errands or just cozying up at home.” I especially love that it’s size-inclusive, with plus sizes ranging from 1X to 6X, in addition to its color and print variations.

10. NAADAM Original Cashmere Crewneck Sweater

If you’re searching to splurge on a luxe sweater that won't cost as much as a designer piece, say hello to this 100 percent cashmere dream from NAADAM. It has a simple crewneck design that pairs easily with almost anything and is pretty affordable at under $100 (that's pretty good for Mongolian cashmere!). This is the perfect knit to wear over a basic white tee, allowing the white collar to peek out and making you look even more stylish, effortlessly. And even though it’s thin and lightweight, it’s going to be incredibly warm, thanks to that cashmere fabric.

11. ZESICA Ribbed Knit Pullover Sweater

For a basic sweater that will keep you warm, comfortable and looking put together, you don’t need a ton of bells and whistles—you just need a good ribbed find. Dropped shoulders and balloon sleeves add a little more intrigue to this throw-on sweater. It checks off all of the above boxes and then some. And despite the boxy cut and voluminous sleeves, it doesn't overwhelm petite frames, according to reviews. “It fits my petite, 5-foot-1 frame nicely. It isn't too big through the shoulders, and the arms aren't too long either. The body length is on the longer side, but I can easily do a French tuck, or tuck all of it in to make it fit better,” says one person. This is a closet essential if I ever saw one.

You know I'm doing everything I can not to make an "open your heart" or "heart on your sleeve—er, sweater" joke here. But c'mon, how sweet is this Shermie pullover? While I'm partial to the heart design, there are plenty of other options in this knit, which features ribbing at the cuffs and hem for a more snug fit. What’s more, shoppers appreciate that the material is high-quality and “super soft to the touch.”

This cable-knit sweater dress is ideal for transitioning to the new season. It has a roomy, oversized design that envelops you in its soft material while keeping your legs bare for a sexy moment. Best of all, many buyers, both petite and tall, rave about its length: “I was nervous about the length because I am fairly tall with a long torso, so most things that promise to be long are not,” mentions one shopper. “However, this sweater is AMAZING and worth the price.”

If I could, I’d live in breezy caftans and cozy loungewear. Like Parker Posey’s character in White Lotus, I’ve reached the age where I’m meant to be comfortable. Admittedly, I decided I reached that age when I was 11.

But all it takes is one too many second glances in the mirror, where you mistakenly wonder if Dobby the House Elf is staring back at you, to realize that you can do better than oversized, ragged clothes.

I’d figured I’d just have to suck it up when it came to workwear, tolerating waistbands that dug in as I sat at my desk, or starchy pants I’d shift around in as I worked. Then lululemon’s Daydrift High-Rise Wide-Leg Trousers entered my life.

Yes, the name alone is a mouthful. But that’s because they do a lot—and do them well. They’re pricey, for sure, so let me explain why I, a veritable TJ Maxx-inista, think they’re worth shelling out $148.

My Review of the lululemon Daydrift High-Rise Wide-Leg Trousers

When it comes to feeling more polished, I love a high-rise pant, especially with a wide leg. It creates such a dramatic silhouette (and, given the roomy cut, it’s also easier to lounge in). What makes these stand out, though, is that they’re made of the brand’s Luxtreme fabric, which is sweat-wicking (great for when the office heater is working overtime) and offers four-way stretch. It moves with you, so you’re not constantly readjusting or fidgeting during a conference call.

The Fabric Works Miracles

Better yet, though, is that the fabric includes a little Lycra, which helps it retain its shape. Several washes in, the pants haven’t shrunk or gotten baggy in odd places.

They’re also easy to slip on and off. There’s a faux fly in the front, which makes them look more like traditional office wear, but you don’t have to worry about gaping or, you know, getting caught with your fly down.

The Luxtreme fabric has a great heft to it, too. My biggest pet peeve with wide-leg pants is that they’re often made of a lighter, flimsier material, and swish between your legs as you walk, making you feel like you’re doing a ‘70s Bee Gees strut. Saturday Night Fever, this is not.

That heft also makes these pants more durable; after over three months of wear, there’s not a snag or a sign of pilling, and they do. Not.Wrinkle. Even when haphazardly thrown into a duffle bag or neglected in a pile of “to be folded” laundry for days. That alone is worth applause: No need for an iron or steamer?! Ever? YES.

The Fit Is ‘Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’-Worthy

I went with the regular size—a 31.5-inch inseam, though to get the floor-skimming cool girl aesthetic, I probably should’ve opted for the 35-inch (I’m nearly six feet tall, so these skim the tops of my shoes.) The brand recommends the regular inseam for people 5-foot-5 to 5-foot-8 to get that effect. Oh, and my petite friends, fear not—there’s a 29.5-inch inseam as well.

With 11 colors to choose from, ranging from trendy pinstripes to basic black and quiet luxury-coded warm ash gray, I’m already eyeing a second (and third) pair. Would I love it if they went on sale? Yes. Do I get so much wear out of them—despite choosing the flashy pinstripe variety—that they’re capsule-collection-worthy at full price? Also, yes.

The Bottom Line: These Pants Are Not Leggings—They’re Better

With all five kids now out of the house, my Gen-X mom is in the middle of a glow-up. And who does she turn to but me? As a fashion and beauty writer, I’ve become her de facto personal stylist. One of the big challenges has been finding stylish, comfortable shoes that aren’t sneakers—and can accommodate her extra-wide feet. So when I saw that PureWow reader-loved brand Vivaia made a D to EE width flat, I was intrigued. I sent my mom a pair—the Margot Walkers ($129)—to try. Here are her thoughts a year later.

I sent my mom a pair last year, and she’s incorporated them into her daily footwear rotation. From grocery shopping and walking with my grandma to dinners out with my dad, she evaluated them on our PureWow100 scale, scoring the shoes for comfort, design, durability, versatility and value, for a total out of 100 points.

A Sleek Design That Slims—Without Pinching

The Margot Walker flats have a square toe that gently tapers off for a slimming effect. “I love the Achilles heel cushion on the back [that prevents the shoe from slipping off your heel when you walk], and the style makes my wide feet look slimmer,” my mom tells me. “The fabric is soft and the footbed is cushioned; pretty comfortable, but the wide size was just a bit narrow.” Though they weren’t incredibly roomy, the fabric stretched to accommodate my mom’s feet without chafing or blisters. The flats have Vivaia’s signature herbal insole with light arch support. The only way I can think of to describe the sensation when I walk in my own Vivaia flats is buoyant.

One of my favorite aspects of Vivaia’s shoes is that most styles are machine-washable, including the Margots. My mom tells me that her shoes are scruffy, so opt for a darker color or be prepared to throw them in the wash. (FWIW, my own pair of flats have held up remarkably well after a tumble through the machine.) The material will hold its shape, but, as I noted above, will give when needed.

As for styling, my mom says, “I feel these shoes are good with jeans, slacks or shorts.” Her style is more casual, and those pieces of clothing make up the bulk of her wardrobe. “They can be worn all day to run errands,” she adds.

The Cons

While my mom maintains that the flats are comfortable (no blisters or rubbing), the shoes could be wider. The stretchy upper is accommodating, but if it didn’t have this feature, then the shoes would be too narrow.

Additionally, they are a bit pricey given their ultra-casual design and materials. I can buy reasonably comfortable dress shoes for about this price, which is something to keep in mind.

Vivaia’s Margot Walkers are low-maintenance, easy shoes that are comfortable enough for everyday wear. Though made from recycled plastic, the fabric is buttery and doesn’t cause blisters, stretching to fit the foot. My mom and I both love that you don’t have to be precious with these shoes, and can toss them into the washing machine when needed. Now that we’ve got her shoes nailed down, it’s on to the next part of her wardrobe makeover.

I’m 5’2” and Can’t Stop Reaching for These Petite-Friendly Pieces from Sézane

My long-term love affair with Sézane began with a long-distance meet-cute. I was in Paris and, at the top of my itinerary, was a trip to the flagship L’Appartement Sézane, located on Rue Saint-Fiacre. As my then-boyfriend waited outside, I relished the chance to comb through the latest drop—at the time, the collections were much more limited than they are now—touching and feeling the quality of the pieces along the way. My jaw was also on the floor at the sight of the brand’s iconic sweater bar IRL. Oh la la.

But was the French-girl brand well-suited to petites, specifically my 5’2” frame? That was the question as I headed into the fitting room ten years ago, and continues to be as I shop for Sézane’s styles today. I’m lucky that the passage of time—and popularity of the brand—has led to not one, but two locations opening in New York City, a mere subway ride away from where I live. But while a more frequent range of collections now comes and goes, I still find myself reaching for several core (and petite-friendly) styles. Here, my favorites, plus my honest review.

1. Sézane Gaspard Cardigan

Sézane is known for its sweater bar, and following a try-on session of knitwear a couple of years back, the versatility of the Gaspard cardigan in particular continued to live rent-free in my head. After all, it’s a sweater that is designed to be multi-use (you can wear it buttoned up in the front or the back). It also comes in the most vibrant color range (navy, black and mottled gray are on offer, but I couldn’t help but gravitate toward the punch of color that is red). It runs large, per the website description, so I stuck with a small instead of sizing up for just a touch of roominess—a nice feature in sweaters, even as a petite. The crop hits just right—not too short, not too long—on my 5’2” frame and is easy to tuck into jeans without adding a ton of bulk. In general, I appreciate the lightness of the knit in that it is easy enough to wear on its own, but also layers well over a turtleneck for added warmth.

A little black dress is a wardrobe staple, but there was something about the gold button detailing that spoke to me when it came to this ribbed number, made of merino wool and cotton. I also know from my colleague (and fellow petite), Stephanie Maida, PureWow’s senior commerce editor: A slit has a figure-lengthening effect since it helps draw the eye vertically. After trying on this style, I was so pleased with the result. The high neckline, the long sleeves—even with all that fabric, this design lengthens me without swallowing me up. The hem hits a bit longer on me than the model, but is still above the ankle and cute.

Still, it’s the overall fit—the length of the sleeves, the placement of the chest pocket—which, if you look closely, you’ll see hits just right across the board. In this vertical stripe pattern, the Max shirt also has a lengthening effect. (Not to mention feels decidedly French.)

Since the day I walked into Sézane in Paris, this is the style staple—part of the brand’s core collection—that I continue to buy on repeat. Yes, the range of colors helps (I now own this shirt in white, orange, even black), but it’s the delicate lace detailing that draws the eye upward, which helps someone shorter like me stand a bit taller. There’s more: Like with the other button-up, the buttons hit at all the right places so there’s no gapping, while the length of the sleeves and the crop of the top make this particular design extra flattering on a petite.

Yes, it’s a puffer, but one that doesn’t add too much bulk; the crop also hits right at the top of my hip (a tiny bit lower and it would have quickly become too frumpy-feeling). I also like that it comes with an adjustable waist tie so it can nip in a bit more and hold its place as you wear it. The high collar draws the eye up, adding visual interest, and protecting your neck from the cold. Overall, another petite-friendly win.
