Many celebrities have long touted their lack of online presence. From Jennifer Lawrence to Elle Fanning and Saoirse Ronan, dozens of public faces have decried the stress and danger of being chronically online. Perhaps, though, the ones who speak loudest are the those who lead by example. Zendaya posted just five times in 2025, and all her content was work related—ad campaigns, new film projects, with the occasional birthday post. And yet, last year the internet could not stop talking about her engagement to Tom Holland.

It’s not just the famous who have broken up with the public internet presence. There’s been plenty of recent reporting about “luddite teens,” most notably covered by The New York Times but also verbalized by teens themselves.

“Social media and phones are not real life,” says former high school student Lola Shub in a 2022 Times article, with another teen adding, “You post something on social media, you don’t get enough likes, then you don’t feel good about yourself. That shouldn’t have to happen to anyone.”

And it’s not just Gen Z and Alpha. Vogue Business reports that “67 percent of Americans long for the ‘pre-plugged-in’ era, with many adults forgoing high-tech tech for their kids (and themselves), instead reaching for old-school landlines like Tin Can and Physical Phones.

At the same time, the once ubiquitous practice of being "chronically online” is now considered “low status.” To post your every waking moment? Passé. PureWow Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint, who switched from a public to a private Instagram account a few years ago agrees: “I noticed a trend towards the undershare, with a constant stream of content feeling cringy or thirst-trappy. Don't get me wrong: I still post plenty of lame photos of my dinner or my kids doing cute things—it’s just less frequent and to a more curated audience.”

Aside from the clout and virtue-signaling that being offline implies, I think there’s a lot going for it. People are starting to realize that social media makes actual socializing harder. Everyone has a profile, a virtual handshake that takes the mystery out of meeting someone for the first time. We no longer have that freedom from the pressure of context, the blank slate of meeting a total stranger, the game of getting to know them.

Quiet luxury will die because even understanding what that term implies means you’re on the internet. The real status currency will be guarding your aura of mystery while proving your social chops in real time.

As an editor who has covered women’s lifestyle trends for over 15 years, I’ve seen everything—the pickle craze, the rise of peplum, the ascendence of Cross Fit, the wolf cut, the second rise of peplum…

And through it all, I’ve maintained that, as a well-informed person, you don’t need to follow every trend. (A lesson I learned the hard way, thanks to a Bump-It and high-low hemline.) But you probably should know about the trends. You know…to stay relevant.

That’s why I always have a blast rounding up what’s in and what’s out for the coming year—in the name of take-it-or-leave-it research, rather than prescriptive gospel. Here’s what’s on tap for 2026, from the shoes you’ll be wearing to the way you’ll be buying them.

1. Structured ’80s Glam

Pump up the Bangles (but this time, leave out the leg warmers); ’80s fashion is back, baby. “Back then, fashion was a real tool for projecting authority. Madonna made tailoring feel powerful, while Grace Jones completely challenged what femininity could look like,” says PureWow Fashion and Beauty Director Deena Campbell. “That same confidence is what’s fueling the trend’s return now. On the Spring ’26 runways at Saint Laurent, Chloé, Elie Saab, Schiaparelli and Tom Ford, exaggerated shoulders and strong silhouettes were everywhere, balanced with softer details like pussy-bow blouses, pencil skirts and classic pumps.” Expect to see this elevated ’ 80s as mass retailers as well, with everyone from Anthropologie to Cos hopping on the trend.

2. Haute Homemade Cuisine

PureWow food editor and VP of Content Candace Davison noticed a growing trend when researching her 2026 Food Trend Report: Home cooks recreating restaurant-caliber meals featuring global flavors and elevated ingredients—only prepared using shortcuts. Think: drizzling Cloud23 Sweet Jalapeño Hot Sauce atop your Flour + Water Cacio e Pepe frozen pizza or spraying Italian Sweet Crème Flavored Cold Foam Creamer on your coffee or opting for Michelin-worthy spaghetti sauce like Sauz’s Miso Garlic Marinara, Cravings’s Corn & Truffle Sauce or Carbone’s Cacio e Pepe Alfredo. “Essentially,” says Davison, we want the ease of a night in—no need to dress up, unless you want to—with the elegance of an elevated meal, as long as creating said meal doesn’t make us work too hard. (Because that’d defeat the whole purpose, right?)”

3. Olympics Fever

Doesn’t it seem like just yesterday that we were all crushing on Nathan Chen at the Beijing games? Welp, it’s time for the winter Olympics again in February, and this year’s events are causing more buzz than ever, with fans thrilled about the return to a traditional, European winter location. (Milan and various alpine locales, to be exact.) “I'm so excited to see Lindsay Vonn back on the slopes! She's coming out of retirement to compete this year, and I can't wait to cheer her on. Her career is so inspiring, and at 41, she's proof that age is just a number,” says Catrina Yohay, PureWow’s Managing Editor and resident women’s sports enthusiast. Expect lots of Olympic convos in the lead-up to the games (win your cocktail party with talk of how excited you are to finally see women’s large hill ski jumping) and a myriad of fashion collaborations, from Ralph Lauren’s opening ceremony lewk (a white wool coat with wooden toggles, we’re told) to Nike’s new inflatable no-fill jacket.

4. Even Shorter Bobs

Bobs, from the “ripped” to the “breakup,” have been trending for some time. But this year, they’re getting really short, thanks to celebs like Lily Collins, Naomi Campbell and Yvonne Orji who have taken them to ear-grazing levels. Says Campbell (Deena that is, not Naomi): “The bob haircut does so much with so little. It can read polished or undone, classic or directional, depending on how it’s cut and styled. We’ve seen everything from blunt, chin-length bobs to softer, grown-out versions on runways and mega celebs, and the appeal is the same. It’s low-drama but high-impact, just how a hairstyle should be!”

5. Executive Functioning as a Hot-Button Parenting Issue

ADHD diagnoses and neurodiversity conversations are still on the rise, but this year’s biggest parenting buzzword is something almost anyone can relate to: Executive functioning, by which we mean the high-level cognitive skills needed to plan, organize and execute. (Or, you know, bring your homework home, sharpen a pencil to do it, do the actual homework and bring it back to school the next day). This past year brought a spate of influencers waxing philosophical on the subject, as well as a summit for parents and teachers hoping to help kids with its effects. Even celebrities (from Ed Helms to Simone Biles) discussed their own executive functioning challenges. This coming year, expect more conversations about the tools and skillsets needed, particularly as an anecdote to the much-maligned brain rot. Predicts PureWow parenting editor Rachel Bowie, “Schools will increasingly educate students and parents about why executive functioning is a core skill that is just as important as reading and math. And everyone—from Dr. Becky to Dr. Aliza Pressman—will continue to be talking about it.”

6. Zebras and Tigers and Snakes, Oh My!

Hailey Bieber just posted her tiger-print pants (paired with cheetah nails natch). Khaite has embraced both snakeskin and zebra print for 2026 (debuting bags in the former for its S/S26 collection and going all in on purses, pants, skirts and boots in the latter in its Resort 26 collection). And we're already seeing the styles trickle down to the racks of retailers like Anthropologie (look at these snazzy snakeskin, zebra and tiger options). “Whereas leopard print done tastefully could still fall into the realm of ‘quiet luxury,’ these alternative animal prints are loud and bold, part of the conscious decision away from minimalism and ‘clean girl’ aesthetics,” says Senior Commerce Editor Stephanie Maida. “I think these are also an extension of the look back to the ‘80s—perhaps a form of economic escapism to a time when the money was flowing.”

7. Agentic AI

If 2025 was the year AI use went mainstream (even your grandma is asking ChatGPT for therapy advice), 2026 is the year that AI starts doing instead of just talking. Agentic AI refers to AI systems that can “independently set goals, plan, and take actions to achieve complex objectives with minimal human intervention.” (And yes, that quote came from AI.) In other words, these are AI systems (or agents) who can handle a complex task from soup to nuts. For example, if you hand off your Christmas list, the agent will shop for the best deals, search your contacts for addresses and then place the orders on your behalf. Or if your flight gets canceled, the agent will know and automatically book you on a new one. Expect to see known platforms—like Gemini and Claude—become more sophisticated in the coming year, as well as companies “hiring” agents for specific tasks like writing strategy memos or looking over tax documents. (And yes, that sounds vaguely dystopian to me as well.)

In a previous life, I was the editor at a photography magazine. The medium has fascinated me since high school, and I've now spent almost 15 years building my camera collection. My favorite form has always been analogue—I just need to say that I shot film before the girlies made it cool. I'm eagle-eyed about any new product in the analogue world...including digital dupes. So when I spied pop superstar Taylor Swift with this retro camcorder in her hands during a recent Chiefs game, I knew I was onto something. I quickly ID'd it as the Camp Snap CS8 camera ($199), which I'd been obsessing over for the past two months. Trust me when I say every Gen Zer wants this nostalgic little camcorder—it's going to be *the* gift of the year. I've been using mine obsessively since it launched. Here's the rundown.

Accessible Super 8

With her love of wax seals and festive music video that leaned heavily on old footage, Swift hardly surprised me by having the CS 8 in her hands.

The CS 8 mimics the experience of shooting Super 8, a dominant film format in the '60s, '70s and '80s targeting the home movie market. It's still popular today, if only for its aesthetic—Harry Styles' "Watermelon Sugar" music video famously recreated the vintage, grainy Super 8 look. The main problem with the film today is the cost. To buy, develop and digitize a reel of film (which amounts to maybe two or three minutes of raw footage), you're spending just shy of the cost of this digital iteration. That was a major pull for me. I've long wanted to shoot Super 8 but didn't want to sink Titanic money into it. This is a happy compromise.

Intuitive Operation Makes Filming Fun and Uncomplicated

To give you the Super 8 feel, this camcorder, despite digitally recording, has an analogue interface. There's no digital playback, and you control the five filters, four aspect ratios and power with three round dials. The battery life and memory card storage are measured in a meter with a dial indicating remaining capacity. To film, simply hold down on the trigger. As long as the trigger is depressed, you're recording. (This is also indicated by a red blinking light in the top left-hand corner of the screen.)

The four aspect ratios cater to most situations. There's 9:16 (reel), 16:9 (cinematic widescreen), 1:1 (square) and 4:3 (classic Super 8). There's a standard filter, two vintage ones, an "analogue" one complete with the Super 8 grain and black and white. My favorites have been the 9:16 and 4:3 ratios in black and white, analogue or the vintage filters. The standard one isn't anything special and just feels like a low-res video. Which, to be clear, all of the videos are. But 2k feels much more delightful when it also feels old.

Downloading & Memory Card Notes

The camera comes with a pre-installed 4GB memory card, which, in my experience, has been plenty. Granted, I take all footage off my camera at the end of a shooting day—the organizational process otherwise is horrific. However, it can be swapped with a memory card up to 128GB. My biggest gripe is that it's not easy to do so. You must undo the screws at the base of the handle, which gives you access to the card port. It's a bit of effort, so I haven't done it, but it can be done for those who are dedicated or want tons of storage.

When it comes to downloading, that process is breezy. The camera is compatible with any data-capable USB-C cable, and will pop up like a hard drive on your computer. You can also download to your phone. The camera's page has detailed instructions depending on your operating software. Do note that even if you delete the files after downloading, you may need to manually reformat the memory card. I've had files cache and take up space that wasn't cleared until I did a format to FAT32. This is accessed in Format (Windows) and Disk Utility (Mac).

The Bottom Line

I've never been a video person (especially not a digital one), but I loved the CS 8 so much I gave it precious bag space for my three-week trip home...and I'm a notoriously light packer. The camera is incredibly user-friendly, but also caters to more advanced creators with a cold shoe that can accommodate external lights and mics. Though, the raw sound captured isn't half bad for what it is. Overall, it's a fun way to get the retro feel of Super 8 without spending a small fortune every time you want to film. Plus, you're not at the mercy of poor lighting, as film is picky. Speaking on behalf of my nostalgia-obsessed generation, this is the one gift that is sure to be a hit.

One of the biggest changes with the Frame Pro design is that it's equipped with Samsung's most advanced Neo QLED 4K display (powered with mini LED lights for precision), which means you'll get optimized sound and AI-enhanced picture quality for a clear, crisp viewing experience whether you're streaming movies, playing games or admiring an art display. "This TV is incredible and makes you feel like you are right there in real life! Crystal clear imaging, sleek design, lightweight. Perfect TV all around," shared one reviewer who especially appreciated the update. A few other changes include a wireless version of the One Connect box that controls your TV while cutting down on clutter and a live translation feature that can generate subtitles in the language of your choosing.

If you're anything like me, you likely have a bunch of different tech devices lying around your space—a personal laptop for everything from online shopping to booking trips, a work laptop for, well, work, a Kindle for reading...you get where I'm going with this. But since I often find my bed and couch so cluttered with them, the TCL Nxtpaper 14 tablet (was $470, now $370) caught my eye as a device that can do it all without taking up a ton of space. And considering it's over 20 percent off for Amazon's October Prime Day (aka Prime Big Deal Days, on Oct. 7 through Oct. 8), I thought this would be the perfect time to share all of my thoughts.

My Experience with the TCL Nxtpaper 14 Tablet

One of the things that intrigued me the most about this tablet, the latest release in the brand's Nxtpaper line, is its ability to switch between a standard, color paper and ink paper display. (Think the difference between your laptop screen, a color e-reader and a black and white e-reader.) I gravitated towards the standard and color paper options the most for things like streaming, browsing Pinterest and doing a bit of fall fashion shopping. All three modes are super easy on the eyes, though, especially if you activate the eye comfort mode while using the standard display, which helps to filter out blue light and reduce eye strain by adjusting the temperature of the display. Plus, you can easily switch between them with a convenient button at the top of the tablet.

The Nxtpaper 14 tablet also has a bunch of other eye care features that I appreciate, such as a reminder to rest your eyes after looking at the screen for a set amount of time (you can choose how much time passes between reminders and how long the rest period is). You can set additional alerts for proximity to the screen, too light or dark lighting and more.

When it comes to actually using the tablet, I found the process to be pretty intuitive. It comes preloaded with Google apps like Gmail, Google Meet, Google Maps and more. Plus, you can download anything that's available on the Google Play store for Android devices (a few apps I chose are Netflix, Libro.fm and Hoopla for easy streaming, audiobook listening and reading). Everything works just as it would on a smart phone, with the added benefits of a larger display (and those different modes). The included stylus is lightweight and accurate when it comes to selecting and writing things within apps.

The tablet has a pretty good battery life, too—I'd say it lasts a bit longer than my laptop, but not as long as my Kindle. (Though it varies depending on what I'm using the device for—for example, streaming a few episodes in a row definitely makes it run out more quickly.)

The only downside I experienced was that, without a case or stand, the tablet can be a bit large to hold comfortably—but that can easily be remedied with a case with a built-in stand (the bundle I'm linking in this article includes one) or a pillow stand like this, which I may just scoop up myself while it's on deal.

All things considered, I'd say this tablet is definitely worth the buy (especially while you can save $100 on it!), particularly for anyone who wants to condense their devices, or wants to pick one up that will be convenient to travel with since it can do so much. But remember, this deal only lasts through Oct. 8, so if you're thinking of snagging one (or gifting one over the holidays), I'd suggest picking it up now before the price goes back up.

While plenty of reviewers already rave over the high quality of the Apple AirPods Pro noise-canceling technology, the brand notes that this latest update should remove up to two times more noise than the last version. These new earbuds will also offer a new acoustic architecture that increases the quality of the bass and provides more clarity in instrumental and vocal sounds. Not to mention, you can expect to get a couple extra hours of listening time before having to recharge them.

Maybe one of the most exciting new features is that the earbuds can actually perform live translation and aid in communication across languages using Apple Intelligence. (Yeah, you're gonna want to put these on your shopping list before your next Euro trip.)

As for health features, there's a ton to be impressed with. One of the best new features for the AirPods Pro 3 is the ability to track your heart rate and calories burned during up to 50 different workouts (yep, just from your ears). There's also a custom sound signature that adapts to your ear's geometry to get the best fit. And while you'll still get the hearing test that came with the Apple AirPods Pro 2, these new ones will also include a hearing aid feature with Conversation Boost and active hearing protection, according to the brand.

So needless to say, if you've been thinking of upgrading your wireless earbuds (whether for work, play, travel, fitness or, let's be honest, all of the above), the upcoming Apple AirPods 3 are well worth the buy. One of the things I love most about it is just how lightweight it is. It's super easy to toss on for a day out running errands when I might be weighed down by other things like grocery bags, and don't want to have to lug around a purse also. I appreciate the magnetic feature, which keeps the wallet securely in place while I'm out and about. As for the wallet itself, I'm able to comfortably fit four cards inside (a couple less if I'm also packing cash), which allows me to always have my license, credit card and maybe a gift card or two on hand. And since the button closure feels secure, I don't have to worry about important items slipping out. The only downside here is that the wallet isn't big enough to fit my keys, and while I could clip them onto the strap, I think I'll be picking up an additional pouch attachment so they don't make so much noise (and stay safe) as I'm walking with them.

Design-wise, there are five different options available—all of which have such a sleek look (and fit a variety of iPhone sizes ranging from the 13 Pro Max through the 16 Pro Max). I went with the beige/gold style, but there's also black/silver, ivory croc/gold, black/pewter and black/gold. All of them are made from leather (no vegan options are available for this model) and feature a soft microfiber lining that keeps your phone from getting scratched. Plus, the straps are all adjustable so you can choose exactly where it lays on your body, which I especially loved because I was able to change it to a length that fit perfectly on my short frame.

Overall, I'm so glad I picked up this crossbody phone case, and can totally see why so many celebs flock to the brand now. This fall, PureWow’s Senior Commerce Editor Stephanie Maida sees the trend spilling out of athleisure and into the trouser world at large. “I've been seeing so many unique riffs on the sporty style popping up in fall collections,” she notes, “from these polished trousers from Maeve to these wide-leg jeans from WAYF that up the ante with a drawstring waist (a carryover trend from this past spring). The unexpected stripe detail adds a playful twist that makes an outfit feel instantly cooler and a little rebellious.”

2. Pecan Lattes are the New PSLs

Pumpkin isn’t going anywhere, but this fall, the major chains are pushing a new nutty taste, and with good reason—Doordash searches for pecan coffee drinks are growing faster than any other flavor, according to the company. And retailers are following suit, meaning you can now nab a Pecan Crunch Oatmilk Latte (or a Pecan Oatmilk Cortado) at Starbucks, a Praline Chai Latte at PJ’s Coffee or a Butter Pecan Latte at Dunkin, which was so popular it was permanently added to the menu in 2023. “Diehard fans will be sipping theirs out of a 32-ounce bucket—yes, bucket—another trend I'm seeing all over TikTok,” reports PureWow Food Editor and VP of Content Candace Davison.

3.  Polka Dot Manicures

Goodbye soap nails, hello tiny, twee dots. Thanks to some carefully curated Instagram posts from the likes of Hailey Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter and Dua Lipa, all the girlies are wanting polka dots this season, with a 1,300 percent spike in searches, according to Pinterest’s fall trend report. This plays nicely with other feminine, 60’s inspired fall trends—like miniskirts and babydoll glamour. PureWow Beauty Editor Chelsea Candelario appreciates that you don’t have to go with boring black and white either: “You can keep it minimal with a clear base or bedazzle gems instead of painting dots. Or you can try a French manicure using fall shades like browns and reds.”

4. AI-Generated Music

“For better or for worse,” says PureWow VP of News and Entertainment Phil Mutz, “it's now easier than ever to create music in a matter of minutes, meaning we're about to see...well, hear...it everywhere.” Mutz points to new AI Music Generator Make Best Music which just launched, along with burgeoning questions about how Spotify will label the genre. “One band even got 1M listens on Spotify,” he notes, “and the song (and the band itself) is AI-generated. Will artists begin to embrace the tool? Is that even ethical? Am I about to become the next big pop artist? That remains to be seen.”

5. Luxury Hot-and-Cold Water Therapy

Cold plunge has been trending for a while, but resorts and homeowners are taking hot-and-cold therapy to new levels as we finish up the year. Take Zion Canyon Hot Springs, which opened in late August with more than 50 bodies of water including mineral soaking pools, cold plunges and barrel saunas. “This is the latest in a year of new resorts, from California to Virginia, built around natural thermal springs—and the flood continues, with more than 250 new thermal hot springs projects in development, according to the Global Wellness Institute,” says PureWow Wellness Editor Dana Dickey. She’s also clocking the rise in luxe water therapy for the at-home market this fall, with an increase in residential installation of plunge tubs and icy-cold faucet systems. “All this is believed to be a way to reduce inflammation and improve mood as a complement to, you know, actual effort-based workouts.”

I’m a lifelong PlayStation fan. My very first gaming console was the PS1 in 1999, which was quickly replaced by the PS2 when it came out in 2000—and remains my favorite console of all time. In a way, gaming also fueled my writing career; it was the topic of my first writing assignment in grade school, when my teacher dubbed my report on a Rocket Power video game “fascinating.” All that to say, when Sony launched the PlayStation 5 Pro ($699), an updated take on the PS5 that was released in November 2024, I couldn’t wait to see how it compared to previous iterations. And if it lived up to the hype.

The PS5 vs. PS5 Pro: What’s the Difference?

The PS5 and PS5 Pro are plenty similar, but there are a couple of key differences. For starters, the Pro has noteworthy performance upgrades, such as an improved GPU and advanced ray tracing that, in turn, make the visuals incredibly crisp and clear—without lagging. Another factor contributing to the improved visuals: The PS5 Pro includes an AI-powered resolution upscaling system, something that wasn't present on the original design when it came out five years ago. As such, the standard PS5 is priced anywhere between $400 and $450, with the Pro retailing for $699. A lot has changed from a technology/gaming standpoint, just even within these past five years, so I personally consider the Pro something of an in-between to bridge the gap for gamers until the PS6, which, according to some gaming insiders, won't be here until 2029. That four-year wait time is the biggest reason why I decided to invest in the Pro.

The Setup

The setup for the PlayStation 5 Pro is very straightforward, as the design is lightweight, and the instructions are easy to follow. All you have to do is put one end of the included HDMI cable into the HDMI OUT port on the rear of the console, and then insert the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI input on your display device. From there, you insert the AC power cable into the AC IN connector, plug the AC power plug into an electrical outlet and then you’re good to go.

The Experience

I also upgraded my television to a QLED display last year, so, visually speaking, this is the most stunning experience I’ve ever had with a PlayStation. This QLED display provides a wider color palette that makes images more vibrant and accurate, so when you combine those details with the enhanced frame rate and image clarity the PS5 Pro comes with, what you get in return is an immersive, innovative 4K display that is incredibly detailed (you can literally see every single spec and feature on the characters, objects and buildings). My PS5 Pro automatically came with MLB The Show 25 ($70; $40), and while I didn’t actually play that game, I did use the opportunity to get a sneak peek of the visuals. I’m not kidding when I say the players look real. You can literally see the sweat droplets on their forehead, and the developers were incredibly detailed within their process, making sure to nail certain individualistic features such as tattoos, scars and birthmarks.

My game of choice? Why, none other than Hogwarts Legacy ($27), of course, which is one of the games that have been automatically upgraded for the PS5 Pro experience. That’s my only real complaint with this system— not every game in the PlayStation catalog is optimized for the full Pro experience. That means even if you own the Pro, those upgraded features won’t be present if the game itself hasn’t been upgraded, which calls into question whether or not the extra $300 for the Pro is worth the investment.

There are additional features aside from the visuals, however, that are worth calling out. For example, the PS5 Pro comes with 2TB of storage, which is two times more than the regular PS5. Per Sony, the PS5 is also designed to handle ray tracing more efficiently, resulting in more realistic lighting and reflections. The performance speed of the games is super-fast as well—no lagging or freezing, which honestly hasn’t been much of a problem for me since my PS3 days (perhaps before).

Final Thoughts

While I’m definitely getting enjoyment out of my PS5 Pro, I would only recommend making the splurge on the Pro if you haven’t already purchased a PS5 and/or are an avid gamer, serious about your visuals and performance. If you do fall into these categories, however, I think you will appreciate the enhanced features and quality, making it very much worth the splurge, in my book. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

It’s every family’s quagmire: Kids want to play video games, parents want them up and moving. So many devices claim to do just that…and then they slowly disappear (RIP, Kinect, Nintendo Wii and Wii U, just to name a few). Or their tracking is so laggy that you soon grow frustrated with attempting to play, and they gather dust until you finally haul it to your nearest Best Buy tech recycling center.

So, when I heard parents rave about Nex Playground while vetting toys for PureWow’s 2024 Happy Kid Awards, I was skeptical. But the buzz kept building about this Rubik’s Cube-sized device, which connects to your TV and uses a camera and AI technology to track you as you move, so you feel as if you’re in its games, playing them firsthand. Eventually, I gave in and decided to try it for myself—and I’m so glad I did. Out of the dozens of games I’ve vetted over the past year, it’s become one of my family’s favorites.

Right now, it's the lowest price I've ever seen it listed (down from $249 to $189), thanks to Amazon Prime Day 2025, which runs through July 11, and features savings across all categories, including Prime Day beauty deals and tech sales, just to name a few. What *Exactly* Is the Nex Playground?

Imagine a video game system where you didn’t need controllers. The device tracks you with its camera, so your movements are reflected on screen. (Oh, and the “character” you’re playing in these games? It’s typically streaming video of you, and whoever else is playing along with you.) To that end, the brand says the video footage isn’t stored anywhere, and the Nex Playground has been kidSAFE+ COPPA certified, which means it ensures any personal information collected from kids is kept private and secure. (The content itself is also vetted and moderated to ensure it’s age appropriate.)

How It Works

As someone who dreads longwinded instruction manuals, I appreciated that the setup instructions were visual, simple and straightforward. (Use the included HDMI cable to connect to the TV, plug in the power cord and follow the prompts on screen.)

Immediately, a screen fires up, displaying the available games. Five come standard with the device: Fruit Ninja (a full-scale version of the popular fruit-slicing app), Whack-a-Mole, Party Fowl (a party game that players against each other to complete silly challenges), Go Keeper (a soccer-playing game) and Starri (a Dance Dance Revolution-esque game).

How Much Do Extra Games Cost? And What Do You Get?

To access the full lineup of 20+ games, you’ll need a Play Pass, which costs $49 a quarter or $89 for the year. While somewhat annoying—does everything have a recurring subscription cost these days?—it still felt cheaper than paying $50+ per video game, like most other consoles require.

The Play Pass unlocks a whole world of new games, featuring a lot of familiar brands and characters, like Peppa Pig, Elmo, Candyland, Connect4 and Miraculous Ladybug. This is what got my daughter—and most kids who played it—most excited. For the under-five set, they could play Simon Says, hosted by Elmo! Or be a real-life Hungry Hungry Hippo! Or splash in muddy puddles with Peppa!

For older kids, the puzzles, strategy games and sports were more alluring. Basketball Knockout, for example, lets you go head-to-head to see who can dunk the most baskets the fastest. Neo-Witch requires you to tap into your inner sorcerer, as you wave your arms to conduct spells and defeat villains.

Before you start a game, a screen pops up that gives a brief synopsis of the game, as well as the intended age (preschool games are 3 and up; most others are 6 and up), how physically demanding it is, and the number of people who can play. Several games allow up to four people to play, though you’ll likely need to move your furniture to give everyone an arm’s length of space to play. Because, fair warning, once you get playing, you will get in the zone and lose all sense of the world outside of the game. So keep your breakables far away and be aware that your child may unwittingly karate chop you, if you’re standing too closely.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well the Nex Playground picked up our movements—and didn’t get us mixed up, even as my daughter, husband and I played side-by-side in an 8-foot by 10-foot space. However, it does get mixed up from time to time if someone sits behind you to watch you play and is directly in line with the camera. If my husband—or even our 1-year-old—sat behind me while playing, the device would sometimes pick them up as an additional player, or interpret their movements as mine. (So, if you want to spectate, it’s best to do so from the sidelines.)

Will It Entertain Kids for the Long Haul?

With new games coming out routinely, I have high hopes that it will continue to engage kids. That said, if the releases slow down, I can see kids growing bored of cycling through the same 20ish (or five, if you don’t have a Play Pass) again and again.

It would definitely be a lifesaver on rainy days and snow days, when you can’t go outside but you desperately need your kids to burn off some energy. Also, thanks to its small size, you can easily unplug it and take it with you to a friend or relative’s house, then log in with your Play Pass to keep the fun going wherever you are.

Is the Nex Playground Good for Adults?

This gaming system is definitely meant for kids, but there is one feature adults may appreciate: NexGym Fitness. It reminds me of a way cheaper alternative to Mirror, where you can choose from several quick workout routines, from weight training to HIIT, all under 21 minutes. (Some are as short as 3 minutes.) As it tracks you, you can correct your form, and it’s a fun, fast way to boost your cardio.

Now, did I look absurd doing these workouts? Yes. Did I feel a little silly doing them? Yes. And did they force someone whose greatest cardio achievement over the previous week was dashing upstairs to ensure her curling iron was off to, you know, actually break a sweat? Also, yes.

The Bottom Line: Is Nex Playground Worth It?

Yes, particularly for families who love to play games or entertain a lot. At $200 for the device and $89 for the annual Play Pass, Nex Playground is reasonably priced compared to other gaming systems out there. It’s easy to set up, and there’s a very minimal learning curve to each of the games, so people of all ages can get in on the fun.

It’s the kind of system that’s great to fire up around the holidays, where grandparents and little kids alike can have fun together. (And it’s small enough that if you’re traveling to a relative’s house—particularly one not known for having many toys—this can be a kid-friendly way to entertain the masses all weekend long.)

How the Kindle Scribe Works as an E-Reader

First and foremost, the Kindle Scribe has been delightfully flexible for an avid reader like me. Whether I’m lounging in my apartment or soaking up the sun outside, its 10.2-inch glare-free Paperwhite display makes it easy to read anywhere—squint-free. Even in direct sunlight, the screen remains clear and streak-free—and the included pen, which never requires recharging, adds to the experience (more on that below). Plus, when my roommate turns the lights down for a movie, I can keep reading without disturbing her by adjusting the screen light warmth or switching to dark mode.

It’s also *so easy* to customize how you read. I can adjust the font size and line spacing and increase the size of home screen text or book icons with the “large mode” setting. (Something I’ve appreciated, considering I’m blind as a bat.) I can also handwrite notes directly in the margins, which has been particularly helpful for dense book club reads, including White Noise. To that end, it includes access to millions of titles in the Kindle Store, and I’ve plowed through books on books from The Women to The Buy Side to Comeback (the latter is a must-read). Plus, as a writer, I love that I can tap and hold a word to see its definition instantly.

How the Kindle Scribe Works as a Notebook

One of the standout features of the Kindle Scribe is its ability to convert handwritten notes to text. I often take handwritten notes during meetings or while brainstorming ideas, and with the Kindle, I can select a notebook, tap the "Share" button, and choose "Convert to text and email." This feature is incredibly useful, because I can preview and edit the converted text before sharing it—and you can also import documents directly from Microsoft Word (with a Microsoft 365 subscription). Add to that the fact that I can access my notebooks on other devices. Using the Kindle app on iOS, I can easily navigate to the “More” tab and select “Notebooks” to pull up the latest on my phone.

My favorite part, however, is the suite of organizational tools. I can create to-do lists using a variety of templates, including lists and calendars, to keep track of daily tasks. I can label and organize my notes into notebooks, folders and subfolders, making everything easy to find. And while I was never big on bullet journaling, this device has changed the game. It offers symbols and shorthand markers to track tasks and events—so it’s easy to plan my day or week—and the two-column layout allows you to view two pages side by side in landscape orientation. It also allows you to write, draw and create personal designs with four brush types—pen, pencil, marker, and fountain pen—each offering different line widths.

When my mom was shopping for a new phone, I couldn’t recommend the Google Pixel 9a fast enough. Ditto when a friend was looking for one for her teen. It was the one I sought out for myself, when I needed a new phone.

Why?

Admittedly, I’m a bit biased: I’ve owned Android phones for more than a decade, and Google’s fleet has been my go-to for their intuitive setup, responsiveness, affordability and durability. Those last two have become increasingly important as the mom of two sticky-fingered little kids, and an on-the-go life that involves more phones smashing against pavement—or getting launched into slime, water tables and who knows what other horrors. (Durable doesn’t mean indestructible, after all, and I don’t want to drop a mortgage payment on a cell phone right now. Though, in full transparency, Google provided the 9a for review. My opinions are my own, however, and weren’t shared with the brand prior to publishing.)

So, what makes the Pixel 9a so great? Here’s my assessment, after a month’s use.

Setup Is Fast & Seamless

This—and the price point—became two major factors in recommending the Pixel 9a to my mom. She’s the first to admit she’s not super tech savvy, and the Pixel 9a guides you through setup, copying over everything from your old phone (and letting you choose what to bring over, from apps to texts) with a few clicks. Within minutes, the new phone is ready to use, and that sense of convenience carries through to every facet of using the phone.

Quick, easy-to-follow tours and tips guide you through first-time use of many of the phone’s features, and thanks to Pixel Drops, updates are automatically rolled out to the 9a for seven years following its release date, so it doesn’t seem dated easily. (Admittedly, sometimes an update has caused lags or other bugs on my previous Pixels, but Google has always been quick to adapt and push an update to fix it. I haven’t experienced any updates or issues with the 9a yet.)

It's Sleek Yet Durable

One of the challenges of a $500 phone is that it…feels like a $500 phone. Which seems crazy to say ($500 is not chump change!), but they can be bulky or flimsy feeling. The 9a is super lightweight (6.6 ounces), making it feel more featherlike in your hand than, say, the 9 (7 ounces) yet a bit heftier than the iPhone 16e (5.88 ounces).

Google deems it the “most durable” of its affordable A-series line to date, but it retains many must-have features for longevity (at least in my household): a metal frame, scratch-resistant Actua display, Corning Gorilla Glass. They’ve also improved the IP68 protection, according to a press release, so it can better withstand water and dust. (So technically, it’s water and dust resistant, but not waterproof or dustproof.)

I was also surprised to see that it boasts over 30 hours of battery life—which I’ve put to the test, with it lasting throughout the day despite a 4.5-hour road trip where it was used as a hot spot the entire time. And it features Qi-certified wireless charging, which I didn’t expect from a budget phone.

The Photos Are Crisp and Clear (Even in Horror Movie Lighting)

Let’s be real: Yes, phones make calls—and to that end, the speaker is crisp and clear—but everyone wants to know about the photos. Google’s noteworthy Portrait and Night Sight modes are here. Paired with a 48MP main camera and a 13MP ultrawide camera, getting a vibrant shot is fairly easy. Night Sight, in particular, is great for turning what would be a Blair Witch shot in low light into your next profile pic, though you really need to hold your hands steady (or use a tripod) for the best results, as it takes some time to process the pic.

Also, one Google Photos feature every parent will love: You know how *someone* has their eyes closed in every family photo? With the Best Take feature, you can snap a bunch, then use the photo editor to combine them into one shot that includes everyone’s best angles.

It Passed the Drop Test

Held from roughly four feet, tumbling onto carpeted and hardwood floors—albeit with a third-party case—the phone survived with nary a scratch. Did I close my eyes and hold my breath? Yes.

And again, when, outside of testing, it thudded onto the pavement by my car? Yes. Thankfully, the 9a lives on, and I’ve invested in a phone chain (more on that in the accessories section). I question how many hits it can take like this, but so far, so good.

There’s a Solid Range of Accessories for It

While I’m holding out for the day when Bandolier expands its Google Pixel line to include the 9a, there are a surprising number of options to customize your phone. I know, I know—looks aren’t everything, but one of the pitfalls of being an Android user is that it can be hard to find a genuinely cute case that fits your phone. They’re often bulky and practical, like orthopedic shoes. The Google Pixel line is widespread enough for third-party makers to take notice; you can find a ton of options on Amazon, though it’s worth reading the reviews, since there’s quite the range in quality.

Three of my faves? A wavy case, a Casestify chain strap for running errands and an Octobuddy—aka suction-cup pad for the back of the phone—which doesn’t just help me take selfies when product testing. I stick it to a window to read recipes at eye level while I’m cooking, and I’ve stuck it to my laptop to keep my cell phone more secure as I’m dashing between meetings.

The Bottom Line: Is It Worth It?

Every summer brings a crop of new trends, some lasting and important, some frivolous and fleeting. Tinned fish has a been a “thing” in the food world for the past few years, with brands like Fishwife hip-ifying cat-food-like mackerel and old-man-approved herring. (Sorry, sorry, can you tell I’m married to a person who eats way too much tinned fish?) But this summer, expect the trend to make the jump to categories like fashion, home and entertaining, with everything from t-shirts to necklaces to tea towels emblazoned with a sardine-y vibe. “Sardine Girl Summer is the most fun twist on the Fisherman Aesthetic and Portugal Girl trends,” says PureWow fashion editor Abby Hepworth. “Whether you go for a subtle hint with some gold sardine earrings or go all in with sardine pants, it’s all about leaning into fun and kitsch.”

2. Line Dancing

Maybe we should credit Beyoncé. Maybe Chappell Roan and her Pink Pony Club.. But whatever the reason, line dancing is hot hot hot, and only heating up as the summer months roll in. With Paste Magazine naming it “the internet’s favorite hobby” and line dancing parties hosted by Stud Country (which operates queer-friendly weekly parties in places like Brooklyn and L.A.), it’s clear two-stepping is fast-tracking its way into the mainstream. Says PureWow audience development strategist Nicole Frazzini, “It seems to be in line with the recent reclamation of the cowboy aesthetic, but in a way that's inclusive and embodied.”

3. Horchata

Milk, vanilla and cinnamon might seem like a flavor profile best reserved for December nights around a fireplace, but this summer, the chilled Mexican drink is taking backyards by storm, with PureWow’s food editor, Taryn Pire, predicting it as a top beverage trend. “The new summer drink at Starbucks is the horchata oatmilk shaken espresso,” Pire notes. “And then there’s the newly released Selena Gomez Oreos, which are also horchata-inspired.” But beyond the brand-name companies, Pire is also seeing the sweet, milky drink appear on menus across the country, from horchata mocktails in Chicago to matcha horchata lattes and cold brews in San Francisco.

4. Lemonade Living Rooms

"While butter yellow—2024's 'it' color—laid the foundation, we’re finally ready to evolve,” says PureWow’s home editor, Sydney Meister. “Layered with limoncello, sorbet pink, mint and sky blue, the lemonade palette feels like it was plucked off an old Italian soda label. It’s not coastal grandmother; it’s coastal nonna in a Marni scarf, sipping San Pellegrino." Want to see it in action? 5. Bleached Brows

Put this one in the category of “trending for celebrities, not actual people,” but it’s hard to deny the that the eyebrows of the rich and famous are going, um, blonde. Think Miley Cyrus at the Oscars or Jenna Ortega on the red carpet in March. Expect more trendsetters to lighten up this summer, with even folks known for dark brows (like Kylie Jenner) hopping on the trend. Will this trickle down to the mainstream? Probably not. But it could be an indication that the era of big, bushy Glossier-style brows is finally winding down. (And for the record, if you want to try it commitment-free, just pull out a tube of concealer, suggests PureWow beauty editor Chelsea Candelario.)

6. Everything is a Recession Indicator

Gardening? Recession indicator. Lipstick? Recession indicator! Line dancing? Probably a recession indicator. If you exist anywhere on social media, you’ve probably seen the memes, pointing to signs both real and farcical that the economy is about to tank. But behind the gallows humor is true anxiety, with a generation accustomed to on-demand, cheaply made goods coming to terms with higher prices, a dicey job market and home-ownership dreams that may never come to pass. So perhaps an American Pope isn’t actually a recession indicator. But isn’t it more fun than talking about tariffs?

8 Backyard Trends That Will Make You Want to Spend Every Day Outdoors

Toward the end of last year, at a Google press preview, I had the chance to experience the newly redesigned Google TV Streamer (4K). It was sleek and fast, but most notably, it aimed to replace Google’s Chromecast, a staple in many households.

I count myself a longtime Apple TV user (I’ve had an early generation device for going on eight years), which meant that while I had upgraded my TV a couple of years back to access the latest tech (4K! OLED!), my TV was wildly out of date.

It felt like a good time to compare and contrast both brands’ latest offerings and weigh the biggest perks and pitfalls. Between the latest Apple TV ($149) and Google’s TV Streamer ($99), what were the core differences? Was one better than the other? Below, the results after testing each device for a couple of weeks.

How I Tested Each Device

First and foremost, I’m a TV addict, constantly making every effort to keep up with latest shows (ahem, The Four Seasons). I also regularly download new apps like Britbox (to check out Kate Middleton’s annual Christmas concert) as well as more commonly known ones like Peacock and CNN.

That’s why having a separate hub (i.e. a stand-alone box that connects via a cable to my TV) is essential. It allows me to turn on my TV and instantly call up every single content-connected app I can think of. Yes, some smart TVs come with the basics included—think Netflix, YouTube or Disney+—but a separate streaming media player is a must-have for folks who want every platform and a more organized way to manage their watch list.

In order to decide which one was best, I gave myself about a week to test each hub, downloading apps that I regularly rely on, and giving everyone from my husband to my 7-year-old kid a turn with the remote. To make my final assessment, I was interested in three core things: The app interface and search functionality, the tech it supports (both Google and Apple offer 4K) and, finally, the ease of use via platform and remote.

Google TV Streamer (4K)

Its processing speed is fast and the app interface is easy to navigate, but there are two standouts for Google’s TV Streamer (4K). First, the tabletop hub. It comes in a soft white hue that’s about 7 inches in length and is actually pretty as opposed to looking like an obvious piece of tech. I also love that the remote comes with what I consider a relationship-saving detail—a “find my remote” button. If your remote goes missing, simply press a button on the back of the main hub to ping it and a sound will ring out making it easy to locate. (You can also use the app to sound the alarm.)

Google’s hub supports 4K HDR streaming with Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, meaning you’re getting the best picture quality there is. (Dolby Atmos allows for spatial audio and enhanced playback, too.) Having a separate hub is also a welcome upgrade from the Chromecast’s plug-and-play stick/dongle format given it comes with added ports (for, say, connecting a game controller), as well as increased storage—almost four times as much as the Chromecast—making overall performance smoother. (The more storage you have you have, the less lag time/glitchiness there is.)

The best part is how intuitive the Google TV Streamer (4K) is. After a short and clear set-up process (plug it in and connect it to your TV, download the Google Home app, add your favorite streaming services, and create individual user profiles), you’re ready to go. All in all, it took 10ish minutes to get it up and running.

Still, it’s the actual interface that stood out—it serves you a selection of your favorite apps, all organized in a row, as well as calling up the shows and movies most recently watched and where you left off. The search feature is also easy: you can type in any movie or show, and it’ll give you hits across all streaming platforms as opposed to prioritizing the proprietary ones.

And Google Home users can connect it to other smart home devices such as lights, locks, even your Google Nest thermostat.

Like I said, I was already familiar with Apple TV, which meant I had a better base for comparison of the new device. I instantly noticed the improved resolution and the hub’s overall compatibility with our OLED TV. (Truly, the picture quality was showstopping.)

I also appreciated its overall fluency within the Apple ecosystem. The device easily syncs with the iCloud (meaning I could display my personal photo library right on my TV), as well as Apple Music and AirPlay. Additionally, I can use my iPhone as a remote without having to download a new app and—speaking of the remote—I like that the one that comes included is sleek and responsive as you glide your thumb around the smooth interface and that it’s rechargeable via a USB-C port. (Although I’m still adjusting to the new side button for accessing the microphone). Another cool offering: The Apple TV syncs with your Airpods should you want to stream content through headphones.

As for the search, it’s now powered by Siri, which allows for fluid and efficient commands. (There is a keyboard feature, though you have to scroll around to plunk out each letter.) I found it easy to call up my favorite content and love how quickly it translates a rushed command. (“Play dinosaur size comparison on YouTube,” for example—also, don’t ask.) The latest model of Apple TV comes in two different sizes (128GB vs 64GB). The box itself is still black and techy-looking, but it’s sleek and low-profile.

The Winner: It Depends on the Use Case

I dub the Google TV Streamer (4K) a winner for its price point, performance and—not joking—that “find my remote” button. That said, the Apple TV experience, like all Apple experiences, is design-forward and nimble, offering a competitive alternative, particularly if you have a lot of Apple devices and services to integrate. You’ll just have to be OK with the increased price point.

I’ve been in a long-distance relationship going on three years. One of the secrets to our success? We keep a standing streaming date. What to Know About the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x Laptop

Featuring a 14.5-inch display, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x is a bit larger than my two 13-inch Apple MacBooks, but, true to its name, it’s as slim, sleek and lightweight as can be. Not only is its base thinner than the 2020 MacBook Pro I use for work, but it’s also lighter, coming in at just over 2.8 pounds compared to the MacBook Pro’s 3 pounds. If I had to choose between the two of them for a spot in my carry-on bag, I think you could guess which one I’d prefer.

Per the brand, the computer delivers up to two times the battery life of other PCs—though I’d add here that it also outlasted both of my Apple laptops on a single charge. After all, the Lenovo boasts a 23.5-hour battery life, while the MacBook Air and Pro tout 18- and 20-hour ones, respectively.

In addition to the stunning OLED digital display, which I’ll get to in a moment, the PC is notable for its convenient touchscreen and built-in AI assistant, Windows Copilot (which, even for someone as AI-averse as I am, came in handy when I asked for a full rundown of what to wear given the spring week’s fickle weather).

My Experience Using the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x Laptop

Upon checking into the hotel, I found my sleek Lenovo laptop on the bed, light, bright and raring to go—no charger included. OK, I thought to myself, challenge accepted. I texted my BF that I was ready for movie night. We settled on Sicario, a 2015 crime thriller starring Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro. Now, this movie was pretty dark—and I’m not just talking about its subject matter. Between the nighttime shootouts, murmurs at dusk and moments in dimly lit dive bars, I know I would have struggled to see a bunch of the scenes clearly on my usual streaming device, which just kind of blurs everything together once the brightness dips below a certain level. But on the Yoga Slim 7x, I could see everything, not just clearly, but oh-so crisply. Behold, Emily Blunt in her neon-illuminated glory:

The stunning visuals and crystal-clear colors are all thanks to the PureSight 3K OLED display, complete with Dolby Vision and up to 1000 nits of peak brightness—in other words, this baby was made to display even the dimmest of films in vibrant clarity. This alone could benefit my long-distance date nights, since I would no longer have to ask my BF to pause, rewind and explain what just happened in the dark (much to his exasperation).

But let’s circle back to the main thing I’m here to talk about, which is the laptop’s seriously impressive battery life. After finishing the 2-hour film, we didn’t want to say good night just yet, so we moved on to a roughly 45-minute episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (nerd alert, I know). Sans the lagging that I frequently experience when streaming the show on my other devices, I was able to focus more on the storyline and my (incredibly clever, if I do say so myself) quips to my partner. By the time we’d wrapped that up, the laptop was at a 75 percent charge. But I wasn’t stopping there.

A little something about me? I need some background noise in order to go to sleep—an episode of Bob’s Burgers, preferably. (At this point, I consider H. Jon Benjamin’s TV dad voice to be the equivalent of a lullaby.) So, of course, I pulled up Hulu, set the show on autoplay and finally drifted off. When I awoke, the first thing I did was peep the battery. This guy was at a healthy 42 percent! Honestly, I was shocked it still had any juice left at all, but I took this as a sign to watch some Bridgerton with my breakfast.

After an all-night and all-morning streaming session, the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x was still going strong. And, no, I really didn’t need that charger.

Bottom Line: Is the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x Laptop Worth It?

From its slim footprint to its super clear visuals to its seemingly everlasting battery, there’s not much about the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x I didn’t like. My only complaint would be the heavy click required of the trackpad, which is something one would need to get used to if they’ve grown accustomed to the light touch of a MacBook.

I won’t deny the fact that, starting at $950, this PC is pricey. But if you’re someone who does a lot of streaming (especially on the go), the battery life alone is worth the splurge—even if your relationship doesn’t depend on it. And let’s just say that if you’ve ever forgotten to pack a charger while traveling, this computer could come in handy.

And, of course, the vibrant OLED display isn’t just for shows and movies; I would say this is also a great laptop for anyone who works on graphic design, video- or photo-editing and anything else that requires a keen eye for visuals. As for me? I’ll be using it to binge-watch with my long-distance beau. Ah, modern romance.

Exactly What to Do with Your Hands in Photos, So It’s Flattering Every Time

The Copy+Paste Technique

Here’s how I approach this tip. First, I find the location I want for the photograph. After I’ve got a volunteer photographer (more on that below), I position them in the frame and say, “I’m going to take an example photograph.” 

After you’ve gotten a shot you like, PAUSE. Nobody move. In order for copy+paste to work, you must note where your photographer is standing, and note where you’re standing. Have them come over to you and place them in the exact spot. Show them the picture and tell them you want the shot exactly as shown. Then, go place yourself where they were standing. Perfection!

Admittedly, this tip requires your stranger to have some patience, so choose your photographer wisely. In other words, don’t ask the mom passing by with a screaming toddler. But the solo traveler slowly wandering around while snapping photos herself? She may be just the ticket. (And it’s worth noting that this strategy works on everyone, not just strangers. Uncle Chuck, who’s always squatting and shooting your face at an upwards angle could definitely stand to benefit.)

Ever since Apple’s latest lineup of iPhone 16 devices—the 16, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max—was unveiled, my mom has been courting the idea of an upgrade. (Reader: She’s happy with her iPhone 12, thankyouverymuch, and not interested in all the non-essential add-ons, such as magnetic charging and an ultra-wide zoom, that now come built-in with a brand-new device.)

Enter the arrival of the iPhone 16e, Apple’s pared-down version of the iPhone 16 and the latest affordable addition to the company’s smartphone lineup since the iPhone SE came into play. (The third and last generation of the SE hit in 2022; the iPhone 16e replaces that iteration of Apple devices.)

What’s great about the iPhone 16e is that it’s a phone that knows its audience. (Ahem, people like my mom, but also teens and anyone else looking for functionality over frills.) First, there’s the price point—at $599, it’s $200 cheaper (not counting carrier discounts) than the entry-level iPhone 16. It also comes souped up with the important parts (an extended battery life, a USB-C port) and, tech-wise, is a work horse (hello, A18 chip). But at the end of the day, it trims the bells and whistles that are best categorized as nice-to-have. (Features like Dynamic Island and Magsafe for wireless charging.)

What remains in the iPhone 16e is an excellent and comparable choice of device, especially one that’s a more price-conscious option in the Apple family.

Apple iPhone 16e’s Coolest Features

Back to my mom at the Apple store (seriously, she called me before and after her shopping trip so that we could trade notes as I tested the device): The iPhone 16e is pretty damn comparable to the iPhone 16. One of the most major—and welcome—changes for iPhone users who haven’t upgraded in a bit (including those with SE devices) is the switch from the lightning port to the USB-C port. What a feeling it is to suddenly have a device that comes with a more universal charger meaning it works with your iPad, MacBook and AirPods, too.

Additionally, the 16e includes a range of more recent iPhone features that SE users will love and appreciate: things like Night Mode for snapping pics, Face ID for easy activation and the Action button, which allows you to use your iPhone’s side button to create a shortcut such as quickly opening up your camera or toggling silent mode on.

On the tech front, Apple Intelligence is included—a boon at this price and one that provides one of the more user-friendly forays into AI. Toying around with this myself, I appreciated the text and email summaries the most, but know my mom is interested in how she might rely on the visual part of this feature at the garden center (i.e. the ability to hold her phone up to a cool plant and quickly collect details about it is appealing, that’s for sure). You also still get access to Apple’s A18 chip, which makes everything from apps to mobile gaming run faster and smoother. (Add to that the battery life, 6.1-inch screen and slick design—as a whole, despite its cheaper price point, this phone is rather impressive.)

Why the Camera Still Counts

It’s true, the iPhone 16e comes with a single camera lens vs. the dual camera system that pairs a main camera with an ultra-wide lens. (There’s no ultra-wide lens in the 16e.) That means that the camera (a 48MP fusion design) is less high-tech than what you’ll find in the 16, 16 Pro or 16 Pro Max. But you’ll still get the core features that result in great pics: For example, the TrueDepth camera that captures detailed close-ups and group selfies, a 2x telephoto lens and Night Mode. In fact, the camera—to my amateur eye, but also in comparison to pics snapped on the 16 Pro—still delivered vibrant and dynamic images. (Pics above show a shot snapped with the 16e on the left and the 16 Pro on the right.) The lack of an ultra-wide lens did mean that my shots were a bit tighter in the crop, but in the case of someone like my mom, she’s mostly taking grandkid and plant pics, so she feels OK with a phone without the ultra-wide lens.

One fun feature that is definitely an upgrade and included in the 16e is a photo capability that comes via Apple Intelligence called Clean Up, which makes it possible to remove distracting elements from pics. (That stranger that photobombed your shot? They’re erased in a single tap.) It’s fun to play around with and easily elevates any pic.

The Price

As the saying goes, the bigger, the better. And in this case, we're talking about the Galaxy S25 Ultra's rectangular screen size, which clocks in at 6.9 inches. To put that into perspective, it's nearly the size of my head. But a bigger screen can come in handy for all sorts of things, from streaming and gaming to taking pictures and working on the go, which leads me to the differences between this latest model and its predecessor (aka the Samsung S24 Ultra, which launched in Jan. 2024).

There are quite a few differences between the new Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and last year's model, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. Besides its design, which features softer, rounder corners (similar to the latest Apple iPhones), the S25 Ultra is 0.4 millimeters thinner than the S24 Ultra, so it's even easier to hold. But the biggest (and best) difference between the two has to be the photo features. Not only does the S25 Ultra boast an upgraded 50MP Ultra-wide lens, which crisply captures even the smallest details, it also has a next-gen ProVisual Engine that enhances every photo so they come out picture-perfect every time. As if it couldn't get any better than that, the S25 Ultra also has clearer night vision, so darkness won't get in the way of your video or photo shoot. 

I actually snapped a few photos of my own to see if the S25 Ultra camera was really better than the S24 Ultra, and as you can peep in the selfies below, the S25 (on the right) delivered a super sharp picture that captured every detail of my face just right. If you fancy yourself the designated family photog, let's just say you need this bad boy on hand for every occasion and vacation.

I would be remiss not to mention other features of the S25 Ultra that make it more than just a smartphone, though.  As I mentioned, this newest model also has an AI companion designed to be one step ahead of your every need. What this really means is that you'll be able to streamline your day with the help of Google Gemini, which you can use to search for pet-friendly vegan restaurants nearby (because why not bring Max?) and text it to your friend without actually putting in the work. In other words, the S25 Ultra can complete multiple tasks with a single ask, so you have fewer things to worry about.

Another thing I love about this new phone is the personalized briefings, which are only available on the latest Samsung Galaxy S25 series. These briefings—which live at the bottom of the screen—give you an outlook of your entire day, including how you slept during the night (if you have a Samsung Galaxy ring or watch connected), what meetings you have on your schedule and how to prep for the weather. If there's rain on the forecast, for instance, it'll even remind you to bring an umbrella. And, yes, this new Samsung phone also has a bunch of the old features you love, like Circle to Search, which allows you to instantly search for places or products simply by circling them in a photo. Plus, this model has a built-in S Pen you can use on the screen for doodling or taking notes.

Just so you know, *two* other phone models are included in the new Samsung Galaxy S25 series. First up is the basic S25, which has many of the same features as the S25 Ultra but has a smaller screen, a shorter battery life and a camera with fewer megapixels. Then there's the S25+, which is basically a step up from the S25 with a slightly longer battery life and bigger screen. IMO, though, the S25 Ultra is the best investment.

To say it's even smarter than its predecessor would be an understatement. From a better camera to those personalized briefings to a thinner design complete with an ultra-durable titanium frame, it's one of the most advanced phones you can buy right now. Throw in its built-in AI and 30-hour battery life, and you've practically got yourself a mini work (and play) station in the palm of your hand.

But there are some notable differences worth considering, which is why I set out to test both over a multi-week period, with particular focus on the new running tools each watch launched in fall 2023. How I Tested the Google Pixel Watch 2 vs. Samsung Galaxy Watch

To really ensure I got a true feel for both the Google Pixel Watch 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Watch, I tested both over a multi-week period. I wore them both for working out (specifically running, HIIT, hiking and walking) and during a regular workday to gauge how they function as fitness trackers in the moment and as general health trackers/smart watches. For this review, I rated the watches based on the following factors:

• Value: Is the watch worth the cost considering its quality and capabilities?
• Ease of Use: Are the watch and any compatible apps easy to use? Is the watch easy to set up as well?
• Quality: Is the watch made with high-quality materials? Can it withstand everyday use and tough workouts?
• Aesthetics: Does the watch have an attractive appearance?
• Battery Life: How long does the watch last before needing to be recharged? Does it recharge quickly?

Slow Jogging Vs. Fast Walking: What’s the Difference?

I was required to use two different apps to set up both the Google Pixel Watch 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Watch, which I found pretty annoying, but as it was required for both, I won’t necessarily count it against either. For the Google Pixel Watch 2, as soon as I was able to ID which apps I needed—the Google Watch app and the Fitbit app—set up was a breeze and I found the watch face itself to be very intuitive to use. You can use the Google Watch app to easily manage what tiles are on the main screen of the watch, what face you prefer and set up emergency SOS contacts. You can also use it to set what types of notifications you want sent to your watch, and you will absolutely want to go through them because the Google Pixel Watch 2 will send you many more notifications that the Samsung. I found this to be a major positive—I got all my text messages, notifications on important Slack communication and the expected health tracker pings when I hit various goals. But if you prefer a quieter user experience, you can absolutely choose to turn any and all of those notifications off.

Once you have your watch face and tiles set, the Google Pixel Watch 2 is super easy to navigate, and I was able to set off on a run within half an hour of connecting it with my phone. While on the run I found the watch face easy to read, although someone with worse eyesight may find the information too small, as it displays your pace, time, distance and heartrate all on one screen. Pausing the workout was a little annoying as you have to swipe and then tap the screen. For comparison, the Garmin I typically use to track runs pauses and unpauses with the click of one button the side. There was more than one instance in which I didn’t actually pause (or unpause) my run and it took me a little while to get into the habit of slowing down and ensuring tracking was starting and stopping as needed.

That said, the workout data collected was easy to read and accurate as compared to my Garmin watch and independent phone tracking (either with Strava or the Nike apps). The daily health tracking was also very easy to analyze and I appreciated that my goals adjusted and changed as my weeks went on and the watch and Fitbit learned what my regular days looked like. I’ll admit I didn’t use the sleep tracker (I find it too uncomfortable to sleep while wearing a watch), but according to other reviewers it provides details not just on how long you slept, but what stage of sleep you were in at any given point. And, as might be expected, the more often you wear it, the better the watch and app get at analyzing your rest and offering advice to improve your bedtime, wakeup time and sleep conditions.

One very important thing to note here, is that while you can use the Google Pixel Watch 2 with a basic (i.e., free) Fitbit account, in order to really get the most out of your smart watch you will likely want to upgrade to a Fitbit Premium membership, which costs $10 per month. The watch does come with a free six-month trial so you can decide for yourself if it’s worth the monthly payments, just be sure to set a reminder to unsubscribe before you’re charged if you do indeed decide not to upgrade.

All in all, I loved how clean and simple the watch face is and appreciated that the vast majority of the features are very intuitively designed. The battery needed to be charged roughly once a day (occasionally once every two days if I didn’t track a workout in that time), and reached full battery fairly quickly. But I don’t love the fact that I’d need to pay an additional $10 a month to really get the most out of the Google Pixel Watch 2, and there are definitely some improvements that could be made.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

Much like the Google Pixel Watch 2, the Samsung Galaxy Watch required two apps to set up, the Samsung Wearables app and the Samsung Health app. Otherwise, set up was a breeze and I was up and exploring all the features of the watch incredibly quickly—and there are a lot of features to explore. The Samsung Galaxy offers more customization than the Pixel, and can fit many more apps onto the watch itself as it has double the storage space. In reality, I thought it perhaps had too many apps, but I am someone who prefers a more minimalist tech experience. If the idea of having a watch that’s nearly as versatile as a smartphone, you’ll be delighted with all that the Samsung Galaxy watch can do.

For tracking workouts, starting and stopping was incredibly easy. Similar to the Pixel, pausing mid-workout was a two-step process, but with a physical button to press, it was much harder for me to mess up with the Samsung Galaxy watch. While you’re running, the screen displays duration, distance, pace and heartrate, and again it took me a run or two to get used to how the data is displayed on the screen, but overall I found it easier to analyze at a glance mid-stride, which is a major plus.

As for the other health tracking features, the tiles on the watch were not just easy to read but also incredibly pretty. (There are a ton of different watch faces you can use, but all definitely put a big emphasis on aesthetics as well as ease of use.) I found myself more regularly checking my data on the Samsung Galaxy watch simply because it was more appealing to look at than the Google Pixel 2. I may also have been checking it more because the Samsung watch defaults to sending far fewer notifications than the Google watch, so I wasn’t being pinged nearly so often, and found myself therefore curious about what was happening on my wrist. Much like the Google watch, however, you can adjust those notification settings as needed.

One important thing to keep in mind is that the Samsung Galaxy watch works better if you also have a Samsung phone, as they’re designed to work seamlessly together. And while it is cheaper than the Google watch, that’s only true if you opt for the most basic version (which is what I tested). The price can go up if you want more storage, LTE connectivity or other added features. I also found the battery life to be, generally speaking, a little bit better than the Google watch, but only marginally so. I still had to charge the Samsung Galaxy watch every 24 to 36 hours, but found it lasted a few hours more than the Google Pixel Watch 2 with a full charge.

Google Pixel Watch 2 vs. Samsung Galaxy Watch: What Are the Main Differences?

Despite their many similarities, these two watches have a few key differences:

• The Samsung Galaxy watch costs less, although there are plenty of upgrades you can opt for that will increase the cost to be about even with the Google Pixel 2.
• The Google Pixel 2 uses Fitbit to track health data and workouts, while the Samsung watch uses the Samsung Health to track information.
• The Samsung Galaxy watch comes in two different watch face sizes.
• The Google Pixel 2 has double the storage of the Samsung Galaxy watch.

Can the Google Pixel Watch 2 or Samsung Galaxy Watch Measure Blood Pressure?

Unfortunately, neither watch is currently capable of measuring blood pressure. However, both watches do have blood oxygen sensors and heartrate sensors to help give you other important heart health data.

How Long Is the Battery Life on the Google Pixel Watch 2 Compared to the Samsung Galaxy Watch?

The battery life of each watch varies depending on exactly how you’re using it, but in my testing I found that both models made it a little more than 24 hours before needing to be recharged. That time frame shrank if the watch had been used to track a particularly long run (over an hour), but could also be extended on rest days when I didn’t have any workouts to do. In general, the Samsung Galaxy Watch appeared to have a slightly longer battery life, but only marginally so.

Does the Google Pixel Watch 2 or the Samsung Galaxy Watch Work with Samsung? What About Apple?

Both the Google Pixel watch and the Samsung Galaxy watch work with Google, Samsung and other Android phones. However, neither watch is compatible with Apple products, including AirPods and other apple earphones.

The Bottom Line

If your goal is to buy the best running GPS watch for training, then you are better off looking for a simpler model, but if you’re looking for a smart watch that can do it all—health, sleep and workout tracking, listening to music, texting with friends, etc.—then both the Google Pixel Watch 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Watch are great options to consider. In the end, I’d say it comes down to how much you want to spend (the Samsung is slightly less expensive) and whether you prefer to use Fitbit’s or Samsung’s health tracking systems. Either way, you’ll end up with a sleek, chic smart watch that will look good and give you tons of data to pore over.

I’ve never been the type to jump at purchasing a new device. As much as I love learning about new features, I stand by the motto: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Since I already had the Amazon Fire HD 10 (was $140, now $95), I didn’t bat an eye when the retailer announced a new device. But after giving my mom the older product (after her own Kindle said its last goodbyes), I was curious to see if the Amazon Fire Max 11, which you can score on sale right now through Feb. 17, surpasses its predecessor. (That’s right, thanks to Amazon’s Presidents’ Day sale, this baby is marked down 15 percent—taking the cost down from $280 to $235.) I decided to review and compare the two to see if it’s worth buying a new model, or if I should simply ignore an upgrade. 

How I Tested the Amazon Fire Max 11 vs. Fire HD 10

Now, the Amazon Fire HD 10 gets a leg up, because I’ve had it since December 2022, whereas I’ve only had the Amazon Fire Max 11 for a few months. The devices came out two years apart, as the Amazon Fire HD 10 was released in May 2021 and the Amazon Fire Max 11 in June 2023. This big gap gave me a chance to spot big differences—from size and weight to screen features and capabilities. But aside from the specs and apps, I reviewed both devices based on how they help me day-to-day. Whether that’s bringing it to work as a planner or lounging around in bed watching Harry Potter, I wanted to see which device wins out in the long run.

Amazon Fire HD 10 Review

I actually reviewed this device back in 2022, and the benefits still hold true today. Compared to older models, the Fire HD 10’s high resolution hits it out of the park. It has a 1080p HD display, so images and videos are clear and crisp. The size also plays a big factor, as it’s 10.1 inches while also being pretty light and thin in my hands. I’m able to slip it into my bag without it feeling like a million pounds of excess weight.

One of my favorite features is the split screen option. Since working from home, I’ve relied heavily on a monitor and computer combo, so I can see all of my work side by side. Although the tablet doesn’t compare to a big screen, I still appreciate being able to see everything, especially on-the-go. The only downside is it doesn’t work on every app (it gives an error message when you attempt certain applications), so keep that in mind. 

Speaking of apps, you can download your favorites like Netflix, Hulu, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. If you’re looking for more productivity apps, you can access Zoom, Microsoft Office, Dropbox and OneNote, too. 

Amazon Fire Max 11 Review

The first difference I noticed with the Fire Max 11 was the size. It’s wider and taller than the Fire HD 10, but still felt light in my hand. It has mostly the same functions as the older model with slight changes in its display, efficiency and accessories. When comparing the cameras and videos, the Fire Max 11 is bigger and brighter. It’s not a huge difference, but looking at both tablets side by side, the newer version is crisper and clearer. 

When it comes to efficiency, the Fire Max 11 is quicker. When I was setting up the device, I was able to download all the apps I wanted in one go. With the older model, I had to individually find and download each application. Aside from downloads, the loading time while watching TV shows or searching on the web was smoother.

New features on the Fire Max 11 include the ability to use your fingerprint to unlock the device. It’s a nice touch (pun intended) to get to the homepage, since I’m accustomed to doing it with my computer and phone. There’s also the addition of the stylus pen. A downside I mentioned in my review of the Fire HD 10 was that I wanted accessories that could enhance my productivity. The pen makes it easy to jot down notes, press on specific links and overall glide through the tablet.

Now, I wouldn’t say it’s the best pen, as it can mess up words and symbols if you don’t write clearly. However, it’s compatible with most apps and will notify you which ones you can use to start drawing or dabbling on. Other new additions include more settings in the drop down homescreen such as screen mirroring and screen recording.

• Battery Life: The Amazon Fire HD 10 has 12 hours of battery life versus the Fire Max 11, which can last up to 14 hours. (FYI: Both devices still hold more battery life than the latest iPad models, which only carry about ten hours.) The charging time is pretty similar—the Fire HD 10 takes four hours and the Fire Max 11 takes 4.2 hours using the provided adapter. 
• Display: The Fire HD 10 has 1080p (1920 x 1200) and uses more than two million pixels (224 ppi), whereas the Fire Max 11 has 2000 x 1200 IPS resolution with 2.4 million pixels (213 ppi). These specs are crucial in getting bright and vivid images. Both devices have a 3.5mm stereo jack, two built-in microphones, volume buttons, USB-C 2.0 port and power button. 
• Camera: The Fire HD 10’s front camera is 2MP with 720p HD video and the back camera is 5MP with 1080 p HD video. The Fire Max 11’s front camera is 8MP with 1080p video and the back camera is 8MP with auto focus and 1080p HD video. (Note: You can see the difference in quality and Chris Evan's winning smile with the photo above.)
• Performance: The Fire HD 10 has 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage along with the ability to add a 1 TB microSD card. It also has an octa-core processor 2.0 and 3 GB of RAM for quick, smooth movements. The Fire Max 11 can hold 64 or 128 GB, but also be expanded to 1 TB, too. Similar to the older model, it has an octa-core processor 2.2 and a 4 GB of RAM, so it’s even faster to go through apps.
• Size and Weight: The Fire HD is 10.1 inches and weighs 16.4 ounces, whereas the Fire Max 11 is 11 inches and weighs 17.28 ounces. Both devices are made with aluminosilicate glass, which makes them durable and reduces the chance of getting them all scratched up if you drop them. However, one difference is the Fire HD 10 is made with 28 percent recycled plastic and Fire Max 11 is made of 34 percent recycled plastic and 55 percent recycled aluminum. 
• Accessories:You’re able to purchase a cover, a Bluetooth keyboard and a screen protector for both devices. However, the Fire Max 11 has a compatible stylus pen to enhance your productivity. Also, the keyboard/case for the Fire Max 11 is more efficient, as it’s magnetized, so you can snap on and off with ease. As someone that received all the accessories for the Fire HD 10 and Fire Max 11, I can assure you it’s a must if you’re looking to use this for work or school. 

Amazon Fire Max 11 vs. Fire HD 10: Which One's Worth It?

Honestly, both devices are great options. There are some differences between the devices, but they are very slight upgrades that someone that hasn’t tried both like myself wouldn’t pick up on. If you don’t care about the specs, I say go for the older model. Mine is still in good condition after a year, so why not? But if you’ve never had a tablet before, it doesn’t hurt to try the latest model. It has a higher-quality display, it’s a bit faster and the additional accessories elevate the experience. Since I tried the Fire HD 10, I’m excited to start using the Fire Max 11 more for work and for fun, especially with a stylus and lighter keyboard. But whatever you decide, just know it’s way cheaper than the competitors out there (by at least $200 less, FYI). Plus, they are both on sale right now, so why not grab a device for you and a friend? It's fun—and a lot to keep up with.

Shortly after my daughter entered preschool, I found myself constantly firing up my tiny Cricut Joy, a Bluetooth-connected cutting machine that pairs with your phone or computer to create intricate, cut-out designs from paper, cardstock and various types of vinyl. It helped me craft everything from folder labels to birthday cards, but with a 4.5-inch maximum width for cutting things, I was limited to smaller scale endeavors. And, as I got more comfortable using the machine, I started envisioning bigger projects.

That’s why, when I heard about one of Cricut’s latest launches, the Cricut Joy Xtra, I was all ears. It can cut vinyl and other materials that are double the width (8.5 inches) and can do everything the Joy does…but also easily creates stickers. And prints at a faster speed than the Joy. But is it worth it? Or should you spring for the heartier (and even larger) models, like the Maker 3? Here’s my full review, after two months of testing and tinkering.

Which Cricut Machine Is Right for You? Here’s a Side-by-Side Comparison

First: What Can You Do With the Cricut Joy Xtra?

The Cricut Joy Xtra is great for making cutaway cards, vinyl decals (like the kind you’d decorate a water bottle with), stickers, custom clothes and tote bags, labels, mugs and party essentials (from invitations to gift tags and 3D flower decorations). You can insert different tools into the machine to cut paper, vinyl and other materials, or special pens to write and draw for you—creating The Home Edit-caliber calligraphy for your pantry labels, even if your handwriting is closer to a caffeine-addled doctor’s. It’s also compatible with the foil transfer tool, so you can create metallic, embossed designs on things.

Given its range of options, I wanted to test it in three key areas: (1) how well it works with heat-transfer vinyl to customize fabric, (2) how intricately it can cut and draw on cards, and (3) how easy it is to make full-color stickers using the machine. With each project, I evaluated it on how easy it was to set up and use (and whether any glitches occurred), the quality of the finished project, the overall value it brought to my life (and cost of completing each project) and how steep the learning curve was to tackle each one.

My Review of the Cricut Joy Xtra

Cricut has come a long way in the four years I’ve used it. Initially, it felt like you needed to join a secret club to figure out how to properly use the devices—and I’d often botch the first two projects before finally getting the hang of things. Thankfully, the brand guides you through the process—it’s literally as simple as going to cricut.com/setup and following the prompts, so you’re all connected, calibrated and ready to go in minutes.

At 12.5 inches by 6 inches—and roughly 6 pounds—it takes up less space than a toaster oven and it’s still light enough to stow in a cabinet and easily pull out when you need it. (Other models, like the Maker series, can cut on more materials and tackle engraving projects, but the bulkier size makes it a chore to pull out and set up.)

To use the Cricut Joy Xtra, you simply create a design in the Cricut Design Space app—which you can use on your phone, tablet or desktop computer—and select the materials and settings you’re using (for example, I want it to cut into cardstock). Next, make sure the right tool (such as the Knife Blade for cutting) and material (cardstock) are loaded into the machine, and hit “go.”

Over the course of several projects, the Cricut Joy Xtra cut and drew cleanly, without issues. I had to adjust the pressure settings for my initial foray into sticker-making, but otherwise, from heat-transfer vinyl to removable vinyl to cardstock, even tiny, smaller-than-my-fingernail cutouts were clean and easy to “weed” (Cricut parlance for removing excess material).

What Are the Best Features of the Cricut Joy Xtra?

Honestly, I love how easy it is to create full-color stickers and labels using the Cricut Joy Xtra. You’ll need to print them on an inkjet printer first, but then the Cricut cuts them out, saving you the tedious task of trying to evenly slice around, say, a cat popping out of a holiday wreath or a phrase your tween wants to slap onto a water bottle. (It’s also great for graphic designers to create and sell their own die-cut stickers, BTW.)

Beyond stickers, I found that the Joy Xtra excelled at everything my Maker 3 and Joy could do—and seemed to do it with fewer errors and issues. There was less of a learning curve, and while I wish it could be used for engraving, I find I rarely use that feature anyway. For the core types of projects I tend to tackle—creating custom shirts, tote bags, decals and cards—the Joy Xtra excels.

Because of its Goldilocks size—and newness on the market—I found most craft supply stores carried plenty of vinyl and other materials sized to the classic Cricut models (12-inch squares) or to the Joy’s 4.5-inch width. It was much harder to find things in the Xtra size. As a result, I made ample use of the Cricut portable trimmer to size things just the way I wanted before applying them to a cutting mat and feeding them into the machine.

As I mentioned, the Joy Xtra can’t be used to engrave things, and it isn’t able to deboss leather, or score or perforate materials, like some other Cricut devices can. (If you’re curious on how it compares to another model, Cricut has a handy tool that allows you to do just that.)

What Else Should I Know Before Buying This?

Like all Cricut machines, you’ll need a few extras to tackle any project. Namely, a weeding tool ($3), vinyl or whatever materials you’re trying to create with, and a grippy mat ($10 for three) for holding the material in place as the machine cuts it. (Note: If you specifically buy the brand’s “Smart Vinyl,” you don’t need a mat, but I find they’re useful to have on hand if you’re working with cardstock or other materials, or if you want to try a different brand of vinyl, like Siser or Michaels Make Market.) I also recommend the portable trimmer ($22; $11), so you only feed as much vinyl/cardstock/etc. into the machine as you need, resulting in less waste, because that stuff is expensive!

The Cricut Design Space app is free to use, but it’s a lot more enjoyable (and easier) to use if you spring for a Cricut Access subscription (from $10/month, or $96/year). You can pay by the month—canceling at any time—or by the year, and it gives you access to more than 1 million images, 1,200 fonts and 100,000 ready-to-make projects (which are as simple as selecting and hitting “make it,” then following the app’s prompts). It also gives you access to a few exclusive features, like a monogramming tool that’s in beta mode, as well as a button that makes creating stickers almost instantaneous. Without it, projects are a bit more tedious, and your free image and font options are much more limited, so you have to rely more on your own graphic design capabilities (of which I am sorely lacking).

While you can save 20 percent by paying annually, I’ve found that I’ll pay for a month or two during busy seasons (ahem, back-to-school and the holidays) then turn it off when I’m less likely to use the Cricut.

The Bottom Line: Is the Cricut Joy Xtra Worth It?

If you are a novice or occasional crafter, definitely. I would say skip the Joy entirely and go for the Joy Xtra, just because it’s so user-friendly and offers you a larger canvas to create with. (Plus, stickers! If you have small children obsessed with adorning every paper, folder and notebook, you get it.) Right now, the machine’s marked down from $200 to $129 at Amazon and Cricut, and you can snag it with a one-month subscription to Cricut Access and an Everything Bundle of tools, transfer tape and vinyl—basically everything you need to get started—for $149 (a $303 value). That deal is hard to pass up.

If you’re thinking of launching a side hustle-turned-Etsy-empire from your bedroom, first, I salute you. Second, you may want something that can cut and create on a larger scale, using a wider range of materials, like the Maker 3.

Either way, good luck, and may the Bluetooth connectivity be ever in your favor.

Together, my husband, Brian, and I tested three different Loop earplug styles. I wore the Loop Experience earplugs (usually $35, now $28) and the Loop Quiet earplugs (was $25, now $20) for a variety of occasions over the past three months, and Brian tested the Loop Engage earplugs (down from $20 to just $16) over the past six months. We’ve worn them at concert venues both big and small, while hanging with friends at crowded bars and restaurants, while working out at Barry’s Bootcamp and while commuting on subways of NYC. In Brian’s case, he’s also worn his earplugs on occasions when his tinnitus is acting up to tamper the effects.

The Loop Engage model is designed for managing everyday noise and has a noise reduction rating of 10 dB (decibels). It’s what works best if you want to better hear what your friends are saying in a bar at happy hour or if you have a hard time tuning out the screaming and giggling of children at the park when trying to connect with the other parents. When I first opened the package containing my Loop earplugs I found included a handy, lightweight carrying case (with a stretchy loop you can easily slip onto a keyring) and two earplugs with four size options for the rubber tip. The earplugs come pre-fitted with the medium size, which fit Brian well, but I ended up swapping mine for one size down. I will say, swapping sizes is not the easiest, and I had to fiddle with them for a minute or two before they would snap on. But once they were in place, I felt very confident they wouldn’t come slipping off the base, no matter how hard I was dancing or sweating. And the case loop proved more important than I realized—because I could hang these on my keys without much fuss, I never forgot them at home, unlike my earbuds, which I am constantly leaving behind.

The next challenge, after resizing, came when I first attempted to put my earplugs in my ears. The two earplugs are identical (there’s not designation between left and right), but I could not for the life of me get them to sit correctly or comfortably. I felt like a dope asking Brian to teach me how to insert earplugs, but watching another person do it actually made significantly more sense. “It’s not entirely intuitive,” he admits, “though some people may get it right away.”

I may have struggled a bit with the set-up, but once it came time to actually use the earplugs I swiftly fell in love with how simple yet effective they are. All three models deliver on exactly what they promise to do, while remaining comfortable and conveniently portable. For the Enagage and Experience earplugs, Brian and I both found it easier to focus on the things that needed focusing (our friends’ voices, my Barry’s instructor’s direction) while tuning out the excess junk that made it so hard to hear in the first place (glasses clinking, general chatter, the base thumping, etc.). And Quiet earplugs gave me peace of mind to relax and tune my mind inward while on the subway or in our open floorplan office. They were a welcome alternative to music or podcasts on days when all I really wanted was silence.

That said, none of the earplugs fully silenced our surroundings. They allow just enough background to keep you aware and in touch with your surroundings, so you won’t feel disoriented or off balance. They do, however, avoid one of the biggest pitfalls with earplugs, which is a sort of blocked ear sensation called ‘occlusion,’ wherein your own voice or breath is amplified. “I never feel overly distracted by my own noises,” Brian tells me about the Engage earplugs, and I can say the same for both the Quiet and Experience versions.

As for aesthetics, Loop earplugs are barely noticeable and lay flat within your ear when properly inserted so they don’t stick out on the sides in any way. The colorful options feel like a cute, but still subtle, accessory. Most of the time my friends don’t even notice I’m wearing them.

Bottom line, Loop earplugs do exactly what they promise to do, for all the models tested. “They’re comfortable, have clean noise reduction and are incredibly portable,” notes Brian. They’ve successfully prevented that ear ringing sensation after concerts, loud weddings and late night dancing. They’ve made it easier to tune in to and focus on my friends’ funny stories and keep me comfortable while working out in a high-intensity fitness class. According to Amazon, the Kindle Colorsoft's battery can last up to eight weeks on a single charge (it's also compatible with this convenient wireless charging dock), and it has 32 gigabytes of storage, so you shouldn't have any concerns about running out of space for your digital library. It's also waterproof like other Kindle models, so you'll have no issues relaxing with your current read in the bath or poolside on your next vacay. As for covers, you have plenty of options there—from a plant-based leather to lightweight fabric and premium leather—and I have a feeling even more are on their way to Etsy as we speak.

Some TikTok creators do mention that the color display can take a bit long to load and appear less sharp than they hoped, but overall, this new Kindle sounds *seriously* impressive, IMO, and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

The Android-powered Boox Palma ($280) e-reader has a 6.13-inch tall screen that makes it about the size of your average smartphone, and an easy-on-the-eyes E-Ink display (similar to the Kindle Paperwhite), along with tons of features like web browsing and app downloads via Wi-Fi. But at $280, it doesn't come cheap. So, as one of PureWow's shopping editors (and resident bookworms), I tested it out myself to let you know whether or not this little gadget is worth the hype—and all that dough.

What Is The Boox Palma?

What exactly makes this e-reader different? The Boox Palma is a mobile Android device that has an E-Ink display—which means you won't be getting any of that glare you see when trying to read on your phone. And unlike other e-readers, this one can download practically any app, so you can have access to Kindle, Libby, LibroFM, Fable, Audible, Goodreads and more all in the same place. It's also super customizable (more on that in a minute) and has 128GB of storage, so you don't have to stress over running out of space for your favorite reads.

What I Love About the Boox Palma

When I first spotted the Palma, one thing I was most excited about was its incredibly compact size, and it did not disappoint. Not only is the Palma barely bigger than my iPhone (a 12Pro that, yes, desperately needs an upgrade), but it's also super lightweight and easy to fit into any handbag or travel bag. Additionally, I love just how customizable the device is. You can set both a custom screensaver and wallpaper and set the left side button to three different functions (a short press, double click and long press) to control things like sleeping the device, clearing your cache, refreshing, taking a screenshot and more. You can also set your device to be navigated either by buttons at the bottom or gestures like swiping up or down.

Another huge benefit of the Palma, as I mentioned above, is the ability to download tons of different apps. I've kept mine to my most-used reading apps to avoid any distractions or security concerns (more on that below), but you can also use the pre-installed Google Play store to download everything from Instagram to Amazon. It's worth noting that the E-Ink display is only in black and white, so keep that in mind when you're deciding which apps to download.

When it comes to reading, though, the display is perfect for avoiding strain on your eyes, and I've found the sound to be clear whether I'm using Libby, LibroFM or Audible for audiobooks.

The battery life is also pretty great. I do notice that it goes down a touch faster if I'm doing anything on the device other than reading, but after a full hour of reading-only time, my battery only went from 100 percent down to 97 percent (for comparison, though, after an hour on my Kindle Paperwhite, which I've been using since 2022, its battery went from 100 to 99 percent). Overall, there's a lot to appreciate about the Palma, but there are also some things to consider.

Before you splurge on the Palma, here are a couple of challenges to be aware of. First, when doing my own research on the device, I learned that it runs on Android 11 software which, due to this being an outdated version of the software, leaves it at risk for security threats and may not be supported for all apps in the future. This didn't concern me much for apps like Libby, but I definitely hesitate to sign into anything like my email or Amazon account.

Also, because you're using the Kindle app (rather than the store installed on Kindle devices), you aren't able to purchase new ebooks from the Palma unless you go on the web browser and log into Amazon. This is the same if you have the Kindle app downloaded on your phone, iPad or anywhere else, but is still something to keep in mind if you, like me, tend to binge-read series and want to instantly go from one book to the next.

The device can lag a bit, too, as some other reviewers have mentioned, but I found this to be kind of hit or miss—sometimes it works perfectly, and other times I'm left waiting for the screen to change or with a bit of the previous page shadowed (as pictured above), but it's usually not enough to bother me too much. I also had to do some Googling to figure out how to turn off the auto-adjust light setting, which I found to be super distracting, (swipe down from the right top corner and click off the brightness "A" button) but once I did, the display was much better.

As for listening to audiobooks, make sure to turn off the "sleep" function, or the audiobook will stop playing, which also means you can't leave it set just to your screensaver like you can on an iPhone. And finally, one thing I really was hoping for was compatibility with Hoopla, but this library app isn't supported with Boox so you aren't able to listen to audiobooks or read ebooks from there.

Case Options for the Boox Palma

Like so many other readers, I love a good accessory when it comes to keeping my e-reader both protected and looking cute, so I was happy to find quite a few options out there in terms of Palma cases. The first one I got was the Boox Flip-Fold case (currently out of stock), which has a smooth faux leather outer material and microfiber lining. My device felt super secure in this case and I liked that it kept the front screen protected, too. But because of the folding design, which has a ridge down the middle of the back, you can't attach a Popsocket to it (a must-have if you ask any digital bookworm). Plus, I wanted to be able to customize the case a bit more, so I swapped that one out for the Bozhuorui clear case ($10) so I could set stickers underneath (pro tip: do it this way so you can rearrange them as often as you want!) and add on a Popsocket to make it easier to hold.

The Bottom Line

That was *a lot* of info, but the bottom line is that I think this device is worth checking out if you're someone who always likes to have a read on-hand without carrying around a larger Kindle or physical book. While the Boox Palma won't totally replace my beloved Kindle, it's definitely a nice-to-have, travel-friendly option for reading that allows you to customize it to your book-loving heart's content. And, with the holidays coming up, you can rest assured that any reader on your list will be thrilled to see this device under the tree.

The Nikon Z30 is a mirrorless digital camera, which means it doesn’t use a mirror to reflect light to the viewfinder and sensor, like DSLR cameras do. On a more practical level, that makes for a more compact, lightweight camera that’s quieter and tends to have better image stabilization, so your pics tend to be crisper.

The Z30, specifically, is renowned for its video recording and photo quality, featuring an image sensor that’s “several times larger than a smartphone,” according to the brand. It features a 20.9MP camera and can shoot up to 4K, and it has advanced eye-tracking to keep the focus on people (or pets) as you record. That combination makes getting vivid, in-focus images and videos practically foolproof, though it has all of the customization settings (an almost overwhelming amount, honestly) to adjust each frame to your liking. It’s also compatible with Nikon’s 40+ Nikkor Z mirrorless lenses, offering further customization options.

If you already have a compatible lens, you can buy the body only for $610. But most beginners will need a bundled package with a lens. For most people, the standard 16-50 mm lens—like the bundle I’ve linked to at the bottom of this story—will work for most day-to-day uses, like taking vacation photos, vlogging or capturing that family reunion. There are also bundles that contain multiple lenses (say, if you plan on needing a killer zoom to capture your kid’s lacrosse games) or a full-blown Creator’s Kit (which includes a tripod grip, Bluetooth remote control and microphone). I tested out a two-lens option, so I could channel my inner stage mom and snap everyday, slice-of-life pics.

How Easy Is the Nikon Z30 to Use?

Charging the camera and turning it on are intuitive, but once the screen fires up, all of the icons lining the screen—and the dozens of options awaiting you in the settings panel—can be overwhelming. (YouTuber Modern Millie has a great, 24-minute guide to getting started that helps you figure out which settings to use and how to customize the display to suit your needs.) But essentially, if you’re just getting started, I recommend easing into things: Twist the dial on top to “auto,” and click the “disp” to hide all of those extra icons as you start snapping photos. The Nikon Z30 is so advanced that it does an excellent job auto-adjusting things for you; you’ll be taking incredibly bright, vivid photos that, yes, blow your iPhone out of the water, in no time.

Once you start feeling comfortable with the camera, a photographer friend gave me an excellent piece of advice: Focus on mastering one feature at a time. For example, do you want to get better at understanding how light affects the clarity of your image? Play around with the ISO in a bunch of different settings, adjusting it until you get the brightness you’re after. Just like conducting a science experiment, isolating one variable at a time makes a huge difference in understanding how it works—and how to use it to your advantage.

OK, this is what you really want to know, isn’t it? Honestly, the image quality is what sold me. Photos seemed brighter and more vivid than real life at times, which seems ridiculously hyperbolic, but that’s how good the sensor is. (Particularly when shooting automatic, as my manual photography skills aren’t quite there yet.) It feels like stepping down the Yellow Brick Road in Oz, and I couldn’t wait to share my snaps with others. (To that end, it’s easy to upload images to your computer via connector cable. You can also connect wirelessly using the Nikon SnapBridge app, though I found the old-fashioned cable more reliable.)

In terms of video quality, you can adjust the settings to toggle between “normal” and “high”-quality options, recording in up to 4K at 30 frames per second. This will result in huge files though, and for the most part, you probably won’t need such high-res videos (even if you’re dutifully recording all of your daughter’s dance recital videos for her future Miss Americana-esque retrospective documentary).

Beyond the image quality, I loved three other aspects of this camera:

If you want to take your photos and videos to the next level—either as a hobby or a profession—this is a great step up. The Nikon Z30 has a minor learning curve, but the automatic controls let you ease into things, making it a great beginner camera, and the price point is right in line with other mirrorless cameras on the market. (That said, if you don’t want to learn a whole new device—or haul one around—you may want to stick with your phone’s camera.)
