Sometimes I wish I could decamp to a charming small town and start a new life à la Netflix’s drama Virgin River. While the California town in the series is fictional, it's not totally made up. I'm a huge Kimpton fan whenever I travel (hello, Philly, Savannah, Fort Lauderdale...), and not just because of the free wine happy hour. There's just always a level of comfort and luxury that I've come to expect from a Kimpton—and the EPIC certainly delivers.

I've stayed at this particular property twice now—once before a Virgin cruise and once before a Royal Caribbean sailing—and I can't wait to go back.

The Rooms

The rooms at the EPIC are large and gorgeous, and they boast views with a capital "V."

During my first stay, I enjoyed a king room that features plenty of space and a balcony with a view of the water and the surrounding high-rises. And then for my second stay, I opted for a one-bedroom water-view suite. Both are lovely, but you should certainly go with a suite if that's an option for you.

The bedroom features floor to ceiling windows with amazing views of Miami's waterways. The bed is big and comfy. And though I don't have a TV in my bedroom at home, it is nice to enjoy a little pre-bed Law & Order: SVU while under the covers in my Kimpton bathrobe.

The living room is also extra large, featuring a pull-out couch where two of my friends slept. Naturally, a balcony sits right off of the living room, perfect for a nightcap while enjoying the Miami breeze.

Don't even get me started on the bathroom. The suite bathroom is enormous, with double mirrors and sinks (a huge help for someone who has a partner that takes forever to get ready in the morning). And the shower is huge and sexy (with plenty of room for two, if that's your sort of thing; or if, like me, you have a partner who really takes forever to get ready in the morning).

The Pool

My first stop after dropping my bags in the room is always the EPIC's outdoor pool. The lounge/swim area is located on the 16th floor, meaning you get even more views while you relax and take a dip.

I absolutely made sure to snag a lounge chair (don't stress, there are more than enough) and order a glass of bubbly from the friendly cocktail server.

And while you're on the 16th floor...

Be sure to visit Area 31, mere steps from the pool area. The lounge/restaurant/bar features ample seating, stellar cocktails and yummy bites to enjoy for lunch.

Before my evening activities, I returned to Area 31 for a drink and believe me when I say the place was hopping. It's a fun and lively nightlife spot, with great music and comfortable lounge areas. Fortunately, I got there in time for golden hour and the EPIC's Social Hour, featuring happy hour pricing and a DJ on Fridays and Saturdays.

Of course, I made sure to take advantage of the free wine happy hour in the lobby each day. It's a great way to mix and mingle with fellow travelers.

Allow me to also recommend catching a delicious brunch mere blocks away from the EPIC at Cafe Bastille. The food and service are top notch. 10/10 would recommend—I went on both of my visits.

There's also a Whole Foods a block from the hotel if you want to grab a few groceries.

And best of all, the EPIC is situated only minutes from the cruise port, meaning my cab rides were super fast in the morning, helping to alleviate that cruise-day stress.

Without question, the Kimpton EPIC Hotel is a great place to lay your head, relax by the pool, enjoy a delicious bite and set up home base during any trip to Miami.

However you feel about Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights, there’s one thing no one can deny: The Yorkshire Dales are a swoon-worthy main character in and of themselves. Emily Brontë’s iconic gothic tale of love, lust, obsession and revenge is set against the backdrop of England’s tempestuous, rugged northern countryside. Below, I’ve rounded up ten Wuthering Heights-esque Airbnbs situated in the misty, rolling valleys of the Yorkshire Dales, from beautifully decorated properties befitting of Thrushcross Grange to more modest (but still charming) cottages that evoke Wuthering Heights in its heyday. I can see Catherine and Heathcliff tumbling through these rooms, playing, getting into mischief on the moors—this property is located in the Dales. It’s situated near the village of Aysgarth Falls, which brims with pubs and tea rooms—try Mill Race Teashop, The Falls Coffee House or Hamilton’s Tea Room after tackling the 24.5 mile Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.

When I pictured Thrushcross Grange, it wasn’t nearly as sumptuous as portrayed in the film. Rather, I got the sense that the Grange was more of a farm, similar to Wuthering Heights—albeit a bit more maintained and moneyed as the story went on. With its ostentatious copper tub, exposed wood beams, floral wallpaper, moody landscapes and abundance of open fires, this Yorkshire Dales cottage feels like the Linton home—and I could see why Catherine would have stayed five weeks after hurting her ankle. This is also near one of the villages that the cast and crew reportedly came to visit. And to continue in the theme of country farmhouse, you can head to Rock House Farm for an afternoon spent with the most adorable little lambs.

6. Elbeck House (Littondale, U.K.)

Another quaint little property that reminded me of Wuthering Heights—the inglenook fireplace alone brought me to the opening scene of the 1939 adaptation with Laurence Olivier, as Heathcliff ruminates over the flames. The facade is as I imagined the estate might have looked if it hadn’t fallen to ruin; in the right season, wisteria and other flowers crawl over the old stone. One step outside, and you have myriad walking paths to choose from, in addition to a private garden where you can take tea with a view of the rolling, thunderous hills.

7. Rylstone View Cottage (Grassington, U.K.)

Billed as the “beating heart of the Yorkshire Dales,” Grassington is a quintessential English village with a cobbled town square. It’s a vibrant, artistic milieu, home to art galleries and open studios—in addition to serving as the fictional town of Darrowby in the television series, All Creatures Great and Small. And over yonder from the action is Rylstone View Cottage, tucked under cherry blossoms in the springtime. The stone exterior hides a renovated, cozy interior that drips with English charm. An upright piano and wood burning stove will make you feel transported back in time. In the spirit of the time Wuthering Heights characters spend outdoors, the cottage has a wrap-around garden with a pleasant patio. The cottage is in the heart of Grassington, with local pubs like The Foresters Arms, The Devonshire and the Black Horse a two-minute walk away. Another upgrade to Heathcliff’s lodgings in the film, Foxup House Barn sits at the end of a road, surrounded by the hills on all sides. The Garden Room at Warren House is cheerful and bright, something I think Isabella Linton may have fancied—tasteful neutrals enlivened by pops of color. Here, you’ll enjoy peaceful views of the Littondale valley, known for its limestone and Skirfare river, as well as the villages dotting the landscape. The studio comes equipped with a kitchenette, coffee and tea. There’s a patio that overflows with flowers in warmer weather, as well as a firepit on chillier evenings.

10. West Calf Barn (Oughtershaw, U.K.)

West Calf Barn is not located in a village, but in a hamlet in the Dales called Oughtershaw. Should you want to completely unplug, this is the place. There are no land lines, no cell service, just Wi-Fi calling if you *absolutely* need it. Otherwise, you’re ensconced in the moors, right next Dales Way. This renowned trail stretches nearly 80 miles, running from Ilkley, West Yorkshire, to Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria. It often follows a river and is a peaceful ramble. For a more challenging, and potentially Heathcliff-worth activity, embark on a guided hike of Old Man of Coniston, an ancient pack horse route. Indoors, curl up by the wood burning stove with a book (Wuthering Heights, might I suggest?) and, on the less blustery, gloomy English days, the garden, patio and barbecue beckon.

'Heated Rivalry'-Inspired Airbnbs That'll Transport You Straight to 'the Cottage'

I had the great fortune of escaping the NYC cold to visit sunny West Hollywood for the 2026 Grammy Awards. And while I was there, I came to realize just how much there is to do and see and enjoy. I'm talking top-notch food, lively (almost too lively) nightlife, gorgeous hotels and, in this specific case, plenty of Grammys magic.

The Stay

West Hollywood is home to around 20 stunning hotels, from Soho House Holloway to the Kimpton La Peer Hotel. For my stay, I spent two amazing nights at The West Hollywood EDITION. Luxe and lively doesn't even begin to describe my experience there.

The Roof at EDITION is a highlight for sure, whether you're a hotel guest or just staying in WeHo. The Roof boasts an A+ lounge and restaurant with views of Los Angeles that go for miles and miles. So, naturally, it was my first stop after check-in (shoutout to The Roof manager who immediately recognized that I was new to the venue and took me on a personally guided tour of the space). I enjoyed the chill, open-air vibes while I sipped Chandon and nibbled on a yummy barbacoa quesadilla.

I also eyed the gorgeous rooftop pool (more on that below).

The EDITION room was next-level nice. It was comfy and spacious, with plenty of natural light streaming in. I made sure to leave my balcony door open so I could enjoy the L.A. breeze.

With so much to do in WeHo and only 48 hours in which to do it, I didn't spend too much time in my room. But I did make sure to order late-night room service and, let me tell you, the smash burger is just what the doctor ordered after a long day of attending the Grammys (also more on that below).

The Food

The West Hollywood food options are plentiful, whether you're looking for MICHELIN dining, rooftop bites or a sidewalk brunch.

I personally had a delicious dinner at the Tower Bar and Restaurant at the Sunset Tower Hotel. The venue gives classic Hollywood vibes without feeling stuffy or old. It's the perfect place to impress your guests, so I'll be returning with friends the next time I'm in town. Grab a cocktail at the bar before heading to your table—they make a mean martini (trust me).

Then, of course, it wouldn't be WeHo without brunch. There are a ton of great spots you can try out, but I'm glad I popped into Casa Madera at the Mondrian Hotel. The elevated Mexican restaurant not only has incredible food, but it offers more stunning views of the city (luckily, you can't get sick of the views!).

Allow me to recommend the Mayan Pancakes. And do yourself a favor: order the Piña Del Paraíso (a tajin-dusted fruit salad set inside a pineapple) for the table.

The only downside of visiting WeHo for 48 hours? I didn't have time to try even more of the iconic restaurants.

The Nightlife

For Grammys weekend (and, as I'm told, every weekend), West Hollywood is the place to be at night. During my visit, I stayed on the Sunset Strip and it only took one quick stroll down said strip (New Yorkers—WeHo is surprisingly walkable!) to realize just how many nightlife spots there are. I walked by Soho House, the Roxy, the Viper Room, the Comedy Store—and each venue looked like it was hopping.

Even the EDITION lobby bar had a line out the door (fortunately, hotel guests can bypass the line) to mix and mingle over cocktails.

WeHo is also home to so much gay nightlife, from the Abbey to Micky's to Hi Tops and plenty more.

And because it was Grammys weekend, there were a ton of pre-Grammys parties and after-parties conveniently being held in the area. I certainly realized during this trip that there could never be a shortage of things to do in West Hollywood.

The Relaxation

If, like me, you like a little relaxation thrown in with your vacation, fear not. I had plenty of time for that as well.

WeHo is chock-full of hotels featuring rooftop pools. They can range from peaceful to scene-y, depending on what you're looking for. I started my Grammys Sunday at the EDITION rooftop pool and was thrilled to find that I was the only one there at 9 A.M. (exactly what I was hoping for as I sipped my iced coffee in the sun).

There are also lots of spa options. I visited Bamford Spa at 1 Hotel West Hollywood for a relaxing treatment. The vibes are super chill, whether you're there for a facial, massage or what have you. And if you do book at the Bamford (I highly recommend it), arrive early to explore the property a bit. The 1 Hotel lobby bar and lounge is quite nice, and a perfect place to sit and sip.

The Grammys

As I mentioned, I was in town to attend the Grammys (my first time!). And while the ceremony itself took place outside of WeHo, it seemed like everyone I met was either staying in West Hollywood or planning to be out there after the awards.

The 2026 ceremony was held at the Crypto.com Center Sunday night, and it was honestly next-level incredible. Of course, there were wild red carpet looks and plenty of controversial wins. But, y'all, those performances. One after another blew me away: Sabrina Carpenter, Reba McEntire, Pharrell Williams.

And how cool to be right in the heart of the Grammys action (a feeling that I had at the show and, frankly, all weekend long). Highlights included Alex Warren walking right past my seat, everyone leaping to their feet for Sabrina Carpenter and, of course, Bad Bunny's big win.

It was certainly an evening—and a weekend—I'll never forget. I can't wait 'til my next West Hollywood visit (anyone got an extra ticket to the Emmys?!).

More beautiful than the photos. [Fully] stocked and equipped with incredible views of the city. Located above a grocery store and within walking distance of Navigli Grande canal. We had trouble leaving the apartment, it was so comfortable and cozy. Would definitely recommend for a couple. Ended up extending our stay.” Indeed, by all accounts, this is an absolutely dreamy place to book for a romantic, fashionable stay in Milan.

The location is also ideal for getting around Milan, as it is situated halfway between two Metro stations and just a ten-minute walk from Milan’s central train station.

One word to describe this jewel in the heart of Milan: terrace! Really, though, the expansive terrace is large enough to be a whole separate rental—it’s peaceful, quiet, beautifully furnished and boasts stellar views of the Duomo. Let’s just say it’s definitely the place where you and your group will want to spend lots of the time. The spacious three-bedroom interior isn’t too shabby, either. Elegantly decorated, comfortably furnished and very well-equipped with everything you need to settle in. The beds get high marks, as does the living room, which is huge and flooded with natural light. It’s also worth noting that the location couldn’t be more ideal. The location is excellent, too, with a multitude of bars, restaurants and trendy boutiques in the immediate vicinity and the Duomo just a 25-minute walk away.

Located a mere 500 meters from the Duomo, this unique pad has an incredibly convenient location that’s walkable to nearly everything you would want to do in Milan. The interior design has, as the name suggests, an oriental vibe with vibrant green walls and numerous skylights that flood the space with sunlight. You can also expect a blessedly quiet stay, despite being in the heart of the city, because the apartment is located on the top floor of the building.

It’s also worth noting that this stay has a perfect five-star rating, and almost every glowing review mentions the hospitality of the host, who has paid great attention to detail in the design of the space and goes out of her way to provide recommendations for places to eat, shop, drink, etc. One reviewer wrote, “Joeng, such a great host and commentator. Pulling up to the resort through a winding road surrounded by mangroves, you’re greeted by a gleaming lobby overlooking the shimmering turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. While the lobby is expansive, it’s nothing compared to the 840-suite hotel itself that is split into three distinct sections—Hideaway (the adults-only hotel), Diamond Club (the more premium part of the resort) and the standard section. I’ll admit that I got lost quite a bit on my first day but once I figured out the layout (each section is a U-shape that connects together), it was easy enough to maneuver around the resort with even my first grader confidently leading the way from pool to pool. 

Speaking of pools, there are a dozen different ones to choose from, including a few swim-up bar options plus a kids’ zone that had a shallow enough wading area for my 1-year-old, and slides and splash features that kept my older kids enthralled. Note: The Hideaway and Diamond Club pools are reserved for those guests only. We stayed in the Diamond Club and ended up lounging there for most of the trip since there were cabanas available for shade, plus a jacuzzi where my kids would happily have shriveled up into prunes all day had we let them. This area was also a nice mix of families and other travelers, although truthfully thanks to its size no part of the resort felt like it was overrun with little kids even though it was winter break.

Other amenities include a gorgeous spa (if you stay at the Diamond Club then a hydromassage session is included which I can highly recommend) and a casino on site that I didn’t check out.

The beach is Instagram-worthy with beautiful soft sand—I had read a few reviews beforehand that complained about too much seaweed but this wasn’t a problem during our stay and the beach seems to get cleaned pretty regularly, at least while we were there in the mornings. Insider tip: Get to the pool or beach early (like 7 a.m.) to snag a chair.

The Rooms

There are a few different options to choose from, all of which are all-inclusive, including a Luxury Junior Suite (starting at $302 per night), Presidential One-Bedroom (starting at $532 per night), Presidential Two-Bedroom (starting at $911 per night) or the Chairman's Two-Bedroom Suite (starting at $1,326 per night), all of which come with a balcony or terrace and an in-suite Jacuzzi tub. The swim-up Presidential one-bedroom Diamond Club suite, part of Royalton Suites & Villas, was plenty big for our family-of-five with the kids comfy on the sleeper sofa and the two bathrooms especially helpful for washing off the beach. (While it was very cool to have our own little pool outside for private use, we didn’t actually end up using it since it was a little chilly and too deep for my kids to enjoy.) For all rooms, you’ll be given a bracelet for your stay instead of a key (great for me because I can never find mine in my purse).

The Food

There are 10 restaurants and 11 bars to choose from with something for everyone. The Gourmet Marché buffet is a no brainer for families and might actually have been my son’s favorite part of the trip (who doesn’t like pancakes, pastries, watermelon and sausage for breakfast?). The Caribbean Grill was another family favorite (we ordered the triple chocolate dessert for the kids but then had to order two more portions for the grown-ups because it was so freakin’ good) while The Hunter steakhouse was only OK (my brisket was decent, my husband’s ribeye was a little tough). But the clear highlight was Agave, the Mesoamerican eatery that had the most delicious guacamole with plantain chips and super flavorful shrimp tacos, plus a really fun vibe—book a reservation here as soon as you arrive to ensure you get a table. There are also options for poolside eating (the ceviche was excellent) but lines can be long and a coffee/ice cream shop for your sweet fix. I appreciated that everytime we sat down to eat, we were asked about allergies and nearly every restaurant had the option to sit indoors or out.

Service and Activities

Everyone at the resort was incredibly nice, friendly and attentive. The Kids’ Club is from age 4 and up (although younger kids can go with a parent) and my 6-year-old had a blast every day making crafts, playing in the ball pit and meeting the on-site mascot. There are also other activities available for families who are more ambitious than us, like kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving lessons and cooking classes. We did do an exercise class in the pool that was the right level of exertion and fun, with an enthusiastic instructor who even let my kids join in. Download the Royalton app and you’ll see a plethora of activities happening around the resort every day, including dance parties by the main pool and a night market that’s great if you want to bring back any souvenirs without leaving the resort or panic buying at the airport.

Our butlers (a perk included with all Diamond level rooms) were thoughtful and responsive, keeping in mind my kids’ ages for various activities. While the service was top notch, I will say that it’s worth doing the online pre-check in before you arrive because even having done this we ended up having to wait a bit to check in (the Diamond Lounge does have a bar and buffet though which is clutch for hungry travelers and the margaritas really hit the spot after the flight!).

The house is sprawling and so unique. The Hudson Social is one of my go-to spots. The food is top tier and the portions are great—I love the breakfast pizza and bottomless mimosas on the weekend. Blackstones Steakhouse is also good. When it comes to the best small towns in the Catskills, PureWow Editor-in-Chief Jillian Quint heads to Saugerties every summer. “I take my kids to the charming village beach and to see the Saugerties Stallions baseball team,” she says. “I spend my days perusing vintage shops and the used book store on Main Street. And, the 4th of July parade and fireworks just might be the most wholesome in America.”

Dellner tells me that the town’s main event is by far The Stone Pony, a venue that’s launched the careers of many local artists. Music buffs will also want to check out Wonder Bar (with a Yappy Hour for your pet) and The Saint (who’s seen the likes of Creed, Jewel, Joey Ramone, Cake and more). If you have kids in tow, Dellner highly recommends the boardwalk, along with Silverball Retro Arcade and its 175 pin ball machines. “My 4-year-old son was thrilled to explore this space (they have stools you can take with you from game to game so littles can reach up to play), while I hung out with his 2-year-old sister outside testing out some of the kiddie rides and walking on the beach.”

4. Greenport, NY

But, if all you want is to sunbathe on Wades Beach, no one’s telling.

7. Nantucket, MA

It’s home to a luxe eponymous resort overlooking the northern shore. “It’s a little quieter than its storied neighbors in Newport,” she says. “It has an incredible back lawn that overlooks an inlet from the nearby ocean…everything just beckons you for sunset cocktails. You can spend days at the beach just on the other side of the inlet and they even have a sweet little boat that can take you for tours.”

While the resort is fairly isolated (and therefore peaceful), driving into town only takes 20 minutes, giving you full access to the bustle of Nantucket. That includes Brant Point Lighthouse, The Whaling Museum and Main Town, which is overflowing with boutiques.

It’s a fantastic place to unwind and clear your head.” This Hudson Valley town is also known for its contemporary art gallery, Dia Beacon, housed in a former Nabisco box-printing factory, and charming little waterfall. “As for more affordable stays: Sea Crest is my family’s go-to if you want something casual, beachy and close to Lobster Roll. My top places: Dopo La Spiaggia in Sag Harbor is my all-time favorite for Italian. Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill is great for a rainy day. Stephen’s Talkhouse is a must if you’re looking for live music (though be prepared to wait in a crazy line). As for shopping—most of the boutiques I grew up with in East and South Hampton have been replaced by Prada and Chanel. But you can still find some cute, one-of-a-kind shops in West Hampton. And of course, my all-time favorite beach is Cooper’s in South Hampton, though I’ve recently migrated to Ditch Plains in Montauk, which is great for bonfires/ bigger crowds who want to drink and hang on the beach at night.”

Drop into an old-fashioned country store, The Nest Egg, and pick up handmade soap at Phoenicia Soap Co. if you have room in your trunk when the weekend’s over.

Casual outdoor appreciators will want to visit the Hudson River Skywalk, The Vineyard at Windham and stroll The Windham Path. This is an easy 1.5-mile loop with views of the Northern Catskills. The Amenities

One of my favorite features was the in-room washer/dryer. I am not even slightly embarrassed to admit we ran two loads during our two-night stay (kids + beach = an endless cycle of damp swimsuits and sandy everything). The hotel also provided a highchair and a crib that looked brand new, which any parent knows is nothing short of a small miracle. I was also a big fan of the locally-sourced toiletries.

The location is ideal for all types of travelers. You’re a short stroll from Newport’s famous Cliff Walk and a quick walk to Easton’s Beach (aka First Beach), which meant we could pop down for an hour without turning it into a full-day logistical event.

As the holidays ramp up, that means you—and everyone else in the country—are probably hopping on a plane. And with the flurry of seasonal travel comes the inevitable delays, cancellations and other chaos. While I'm knocking on wood that it's smooth sailing for all, sometimes, the inevitable question arises: What to do if your flight is canceled? I spoke with a travel expert to get the scoop on how to handle any situation, whether you're being turned away at the gate or are being asked to give up your seat on an oversold flight.

What to Do If Your Flight Is Canceled...and You're at the Gate

These words are enough to send chills down my spine just entertaining the idea. If you've been there, you know. The anxiety as the first delay turns into a second, then a third. Before you know it, the clock is creeping on midnight before someone finally calls it. The flight's canceled.

Before you descend into panic or attempt to race the other 300 passengers to a customer service desk, hold the phone. Literally.

"We highly recommend having [your airline's app] downloaded to your phone. Be logged in; have your flight flight details put into the app," Blancaflor says. "Oftentimes, that's the first place you'll get a notification that your flight is canceled, and usually it's the quickest way to rebook on another option like flight from the same airline."

Another hack: If you have any airline status or credit card that gives you access to a lounge, beeline there if you need in-person help. Per Blancaflor, you're more likely to be in a line of two or three rather than 50 if you take advantage of the amenities.

What to Do If Your Flight Is Canceled Days Before Departure

If you find out your flight is canceled days before you depart, your best bet is to still try and rebook through your airline's app, which is likely to be your fastest recourse. Otherwise, you should call. If you're having a hard time getting through, Blancaflor suggests the old-fashioned tactic of shame and turning to the airline's social media page. "Somebody is monitoring the social media inbox for your big airlines like United, American, Delta, JetBlue."

What to Do If Your Flight Is Overbooked

Flights are often oversold with the expectation that enough people won't make the trip. However, there are times when the gamble is a bad one and everyone shows up. That's when the airline starts asking for volunteers to give up their seat. I asked Blancaflor how you can actually make it worth your time.

The longer that you wait to tell them that you're willing to bump, the higher the price will go," she says. "[They might start with] $200 in flight vouchers. The closer that it gets to takeoff time, the more that price will start to go up [if they have insufficient volunteers]. I have personally seen it start at $200 and end at over $1,000."

It also doesn't hurt to make your own offer. While there's no guarantee the airline will accept, if it's down to the wire for them, you have nothing to lose in making a crazy ask. Why, yes, I'll bump my flight for $3,000.

What to Do If Your Luggage Is Lost or Damaged

You made it to your destination. Your luggage (with all your clean underwear) did not. Blancaflor recommends two things prior to traveling to take the stress out.

The first is to throw a tracker into your bag, like an Apple Air Tag or Life360 tile, so even if the airline is struggling to locate your bag, you can tell them where it is. The second is to pay for your trip with a credit card that offers baggage protections, if you have one.

I also have a rule that when traveling, a minimum number of essentials must make it with me on the plane. There's always at least three pairs of clean underwear, all necessary toiletries and two changes of clothes in my carry-on, so that if I am separated from a larger checked bag, I'm not SOL while it's being recovered.

Travel Insurance: Scam or Good Idea?

Confession: I almost always risk it for the biscuit. However, after my share of travel mishaps this year, saving my biscuit actually seems pretty appealing. I opted into the tacked-on travel insurance while buying some flights this year, but according to Blancaflor, there's something else I should have done.

For those whose travel plans involve tons of moving parts, you're better off going with comprehensive third-party travel insurance. Because that little upsell at checkout for your flight? It covers only that. Not the cruise ship you miss because of the delays.

"I would recommend going third party because you can put in the entire trip," Blancaflor says. "It's not just your flights that are covered. It's your flights, hotel, activities you book. If something goes wrong, your whole trip's covered and not just your flight."

What to Do

Let’s start with the big one: the Mystic Aquarium. It may not be the largest in New England (Boston’s got that crown), but it’s guaranteed hours of fun for the whole family. The interactive Dino Seas exhibit with its two-story indoor playspace and aerial adventure course was a real hit, as was the superhero-themed California sea lions show (the trainers were amazing). Truthfully, you could spend the whole day here, but my real tip is this: go early, enjoy the African penguins and Beluga whales, then walk across the street to Olde Mistick Village.

Mistick Village is basically an outdoor playground disguised as a shopping center. With three littles (including a recently mobile baby), “relaxing” isn’t really on the menu—but this place comes close. It’s contained, car-free and full of open space for kid to roam. There’s even a duck pond! For entertainment, you’ve got a Christmas shop, a magic store and a haunted bookstore.

Next up: Mystic Seaport Museum. It’s open-air, sprawling and surprisingly fun for all ages. You wander through centuries-old buildings, climb aboard historic ships and catch live reenactments of how people cooked, printed and generally lived way back when. It’s one of those places where you fully intend to spend 45 minutes and suddenly it’s two hours later.

Afterward, stroll Main Street for shopping, fudge sampling and a peek at the famous drawbridge. Yes, this is also where you’ll find Mystic Pizza of Julia Roberts fame. (Overhyped? Maybe. But who cares?)

Where to Eat

If you’re doing Mystic with kids, you’re going to the aquarium, which means you’ll be hungry. Skip the fried food on-site and head to Olde Mistick Village just a few minutes walk away. Trattoria Amalfi is a delightful surprise—crispy calamari, homemade pastas, and lots of space for strollers and wiggly humans.

If your kids have entered their “zero minutes of sitting” era, go for toast+tonic. They’ve got grilled cheese for the littles and fancier options (like a goat cheese, sweet potato and pecan toast) for the adults. Eat outside on one of the many benches around.

For dessert, head to Deviant Donuts, where creative offerings include animal cracker donuts, banana walnut and peach bourbon.

Downtown, you’ve got standout seafood options. Oyster Club is a longtime favorite—it’s in a renovated carriage house and the seafood is as fresh as it gets. And while I didn’t get to go myself (it’s giving “date night,” and I was giving “three-kid circus”), Shipwright’s Daughter has rave reviews for its creative dishes, like five-spiced swordfish and monkfish mortadella toast.

Where to Stay

Hilton Mystic is the ideal homebase for families. It’s directly across from the aquarium, a location that came in clutch when we had a blowout and had to make an emergency dash back. And there are kid-friendly details all over, like a scavenger hunt that had my 6-year-old fully invested, pirate-themed décor, connecting rooms and even a real-life pirate making balloon animals and telling sea tales.

Not to mention, the indoor pool! Whether it rains or your kids simply need a place to cannonball their energy away, it delivers. The on-site restaurant, The IRONS, is friendly, unfussy and full of kid-pleasers (think mac and cheese and burgers).
